Chickabee
I went to let my girls out this morning, only to find that Twinkle was out already she's a beautiful red partridge silkie. Every night when I put them away, I count them. Don't know what happened last night. Thank my lucky stars. She's still here. Will not forget to count again
mollyripkim
That was lucky, especially as the weather was so bad, she must have found somewhere to shelter. Must admit I am paranoid about counting them in whereas hubby just shuts the door so then I have to go and check which annoys him!

I do the same to the point my OH won't do it anymore...he says it's pointless as I always check! Slight confession though, I left the pop door open last week, I went to let them out only to find princess layer walking about having a stretch!! I had gone out to check them that night just forgot the door Haven't told OH though
Patricia W
I've done that too so you're not alone!
Chickabee
There's loads of places to shelter in my garden. Thank goodness. She wasn't soaking wet so must have found a good place
Chortle Chook
I'm glad Twinkle was ok as a wet Silkie is a very sorry being I can understand how easy it is to leave a girl out. Counting chickens seems harder than one might think. I have to count and re-count and count again each evening as some of mine almost hide under the wings of others and yes, I do the check up after OH has shut them in, too
Ain't Nobody Here
My son failed to lock the girls in at all last Friday (OH and I were out till late) . I only realised when I woke up on Saturday morning and saw a white chicken pottering around outside . Thankfully there were no foxy visitors in the night . Luvachicken
I am glad Twinkle is ok. The egg port door is my problem. After I've shut them in I open the egg door to move whoever is sleeping in there to the rungs, then I pop the door back on and I go indoors. Then I usually go back out again to check I did put the door on - and sometimes I don't just check the once This comes from having left the egg port door off all night once
Sandychick
I've done worse A few years ago I shut my hens in the run for the night and then went away for the weekend thinking they were all in the eglu. I got back 3 days later at night and checked the eglu to make sure they were ok........and one was missing After a frantic search of the garden with a torch, I found her roosting high up in a tree. Had to get a ladder to get her down. She was ok, and avoided the fox thanks to her amazing flying / tree climbing talents. Lesson learnt!!! Valkyrie
Did that with one of mine one summer. I got up to find one very happy little hen grubbing around the area normally fenced off. So there she was, hunkered down in the greenhouse I guess - doors were left open in the night - and the gate open because they were all locked up safe weren't they! Luckily feathery feet did little damage to my plants - thank goodness it was a pekin and not the maran because I'd have nothing left! Never happened again!
