Ain't Nobody Here
Inspired by The Great British Bake Off I decided to try and make a cake for OH's birthday today celebrating his love of hill running and his club Carnethy Hill Running Club. I've never been any good at decorating cakes (can't even make cup cakes look half decent ) so slathering chocolate on to look like a muddy hillside was a good plan, I reckon . Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks everyone . Hardly, LL, it's not really a thing of beauty . Although perhaps all the blokes in the hill running club might start putting orders in . They wouldn't be too fussy .
soapdragon
Great looking cake! Has that given you more confidence to tackle another one? Sometimes its only ourselves holding ourselves back...if you see what I mean
Charlottechicken
That is a lovely cake! What is the icing made of? It's a gloriously deep shade of mud! I bet it tasted a lot nicer than some of those on GBBO, and from what I remember it looks a lot nicer too! Last year I won a cake in a raffle, it was made by a local cake shop. We ate one slice and threw it away because it was dry and horrifyingly sweet. I was shocked, and have to say that my own offerings are a lot better. Ain't Nobody Here
It was just dark chocolate and double cream - not used that before but it was ideal for mud . Strange recipe too - no eggs (I know, I know ) but creamed coconut and sunflower oil. It actually wasn't too sweet although it was a tiny bit dry - not that anybody else commented on it! I think a lot of cake shop cakes are made to keep for a few days, which affects the texture and flavour. Home made cakes are usually best eaten on the day or no more than a couple of days after baking. My sister in law makes cakes for a living. Her cake decoration is beautiful and she comes up with some amazing, creative designs. However, if I'm honest, the sponge she makes can be dry and heavy. I made a bog standard Victoria sponge at the weekend for a family get together and my nephew tried a slice of my cake and declared it 'amazing' and wanted to know what it was and who made it. I felt both slightly embarrassed and slightly chuffed that he clearly preferred the taste of my cake to his Mum's! (I don't do decoration, however, so she definitely trumps me in that department ).
