gavclojak
This morning when my girls got up all was well. An hour or so later I took them up some blueberrys and one of my girls sneezed a few times but still ate the berrys and mealworms. She looked a little puffed up and not really getting involved with the others but put herself to bed. I opened the cube to see her and she sounds really "chesty" I checked her over and I'm sure her tummy feels a little enlarged, poo normal, full crop no discharge from eyes or nostrils. I wasn't sure if I should leave her with the girls but if (as I suspect) it's her last night with them I would rather her in there snuggled up with them rather than in a box on her own. If she is still with us in the morning I will take her to the vets. What are your thoughts?
Luvachicken
Awww, I hope she is OK. You know that I always run off to the vet at the drop of a hat and I would definitely take her if she was mine and no better in the morning. If she has something wrong with her chest or her tummy the vet should be able to do something. How old is she ?
gavclojak
I've had her two and a half years, she was an ex commercial girl (no surprise there) who came to be completely and I mean completely bald and oven ready. So I guess that makes her about four. I always try give them 24 hours to see how they and and then pop them to the vets. I will definitely take her tomorrow if she is still with me. gavclojak
Thank you so very much Well what is hilarious is that in my years of keeping hens I have NEVER, not once forgotten to close the cube door. Come rain shine winter summer that door gets closed. This morning I got up to see all my girls out and about looking for their food. I was so worried about checking her I made sure she was ok, put the food away, emptied the water and forgot the door! They are attached to a secure enclosure so I don't know what I'm worried about but I did find My third egg in a row, so one of my old dears is still laying after a winter hiatus! She is still looking a little puffy but eating well, I lifted her up and there were no chest sounds but I think I will take her to the vets this afternoon. Should it not be the weekend coming I would be tempted to give her another day as she seems a little better.
Luvachicken
Glad they were all safe this morning and that your poorly one is still here. I was thinking about getting a stethoscope but then I wouldn't have a clue as to what to listen to I hope the vet gives her the all clear

gavclojak
I think I will get more. After this lot I was always going to have a break as I have a dog with kidney disease at the moment and am unable to leave him as he won't eat when I'm not here so we can't have a holiday. I had a nightmare this year when we went to Mexico as my plans for a hen sitter fell through at the last minute, I found another farm for them but one of my girls developed EP and the farm left her for two weeks like it despite me telling her I trusted her to PTS if one became it or call my BHWT area coordinator...my poor little girl spent two week uncomfortable so think I might have a bit of a hen/pet break.. a holiday and a few mini breaks Really don't know what I'll do when I get down to one hen though

Leicester_H
Are sneezing and chest sounds characteristic of EP ? Or was that a red herring ? H
gavclojak
I think it's the pressure of a fluid filled abdomen pushing the lungs. A bit like feeling heavenly pregnant! I am not sure if it makes them have a rattle from the chest or if they just struggle to breath with it. I don't think it's a red herring as another one of my girls had EP and began gasping when sitting down so I guess it's the pressure.
Lewis
You'd expect to see depression, straining, weight loss and a fluid filled abdomen which would cause the typical penguin waddling. Straining to breathe would be seen later on as like you say the fluid would push on the lungs but I can't think why you would get sneezing or hear chest rattling, unless it was a secondary infection? Just my opinion; will try and ask next time I see our poultry lecturer.
gavclojak
It's funny, with my first girl who I lost she had all the above, I went down the implant route. I have lost several to EP unfortunately and they have all displayed different symptoms. I Think, what I assumed was a rattling chest was more likely to be throat noises. But she certainly didn't walk like John Wayne, was not depressed the day before she died and was eating well. Millie-Annie
So sorry. Been through that a few times with my ex-batts. So pleased she didn't suffer and sorry to hear what happened when you left them before. Have a few mini breaks and then a re think
gavclojak
I kind of expect it with my ex commercial girls now... I usually love my holidays but have a dog with kidney disease, I was told I would only have him 6 months and that was a year ago. I won't leave him so when he goes I'll think about a holiday then
