Cat tails
My dad has the opportunity to buy a second hand Cube set-up, but it does come with three chickens and a pretty cockerel. Anyone any guesses to which breed it is? The lady says the hens are Barnevelders, but I doubt that, as the hens have grey legs instead of yellow. Patricia W
No idea, but he’s very pretty!
mullethunter
The hens look like hybrid egg layers to me. He could oerhaos be a Wyandotte?
AndyRoo
He looks a little like a Marans - but maybe some kind of hybrid.
mullethunter
He had a pea or rose comb doesn’t he?
Cat tails
Looks a little like a pea or rose comb, but it is so hard to judge from the photos. I haven’t seen him in real life yet. The cockerel is a rescue bird, found wandering somewhere. But the lady and Omlet man do think the hens are barnevelders, but they look like hybrids to me too. Well wouldn’t change much anyway, both would be good layers supposedly.
Daphne
Deffo not barnevelders, they are a laced variety. The hens look like hybrids to me, and the cockeral most likely a cross breed as nothing pure springs to mind with those markings or combination of legs and comb. Beantree
Gold laced wyandotte I think? We have a blue laced cock who has lighter colouring and gold laced hens which are much darker.
The Dogmother
The hens are definitely NOT Barnies - I used to have some and the colourings/markings are VERY different. Those look like bog standard Goldlines to me. The Cock looks to be a bit of a mix, but he has a Wyandotte-type comb
Cat tails
Thanks! I was thinking the hens are just the standard brown hybrid layer. But if they want to call them Barnevelder, be my guest. But a Wyandotte cross sounds plausible for the cockerel.
The Dogmother
This is what Barny hens look like; they have a very distinctive penciled marking, the colours can be lighter than this as well.
Cat tails
I think some breeders here in the Netherlands do sell these hens as brown Barnevelders. But I think they must be Isa Browns.
