ali-s
My lovely yellow Fiat has just failed her MOT Big time Over £200 worth of work needed That is on top of the £225 I spent on Saturday for a new exhaust and £170 6 weeks ago for 2 new tyres I have brought her home for a second opinion at the Village garage (which doesn't do MOT's ) to see if some of the work can be done a little cheaper. Hopefully at least one of the things wrong can be repaired instead of being replaced. Surely a car which is only 5 years old shouldn't need a new fuel tank as the current one is leaking OH was not pleased when I phoned him at work with the news, and my day off work which I should be enjoying is ruined. Jules.
Sorry to hear that Ali-s. Cars do seem to eat money.
Snowy
Oh dear Ali. That seems rather bad though, as you say, if the car is only 5 years old! You haven't been taking her rallying in your spare time have you?

ali-s
: You haven't been taking her rallying in your spare time have you? errr....No Actually I have always wanted to have a go OH says I drive like a racing driver Car is back from the garage with an estimated cost of £276 It is booked in for some of the work tomorrow. The fuel tank needs replacing. The mechanic phoned round several places trying to get one but apparentely they are scarce One stockist has been trying to get them since August The MOT runs out tomorrow so I will not be able to drive my car until the fuel tank is replaced which could take weeks or months I need my car to get to work which is 5 miles away, no bus service (not much of a bus service up here anyway) and off the beaten track. I have 20 minutes in the morning to get to work after I have got the children off to school so I don't think I could walk it or cycle in that time. Popcorn
Oh no Ali! Better get on your bike Sorry - I shouldn't joke - it is very bad luck and very bad news. I would consider trading it in for another one. Cars, they eat money don't they? Touch wood, my old banger has been fine for the last two MOT's. I do need a new one, but this one serves me so well, and costs me so little I'm reluctant. It does clank a lot and turn heads when I drive. Good luck with it Ali. Deep breaths now x
Charlottechicken
Oh Ali, I do sympathise I love my Metro, but two years ago it cost £555 (an easily remembered figure ) after it failed it's MOT. It always fails on the bodywork, but that is to be expected of a 13 year old car parked on the road This year it flew through the MOT, after £40 worth of filling by a kind mechanic , and I was able to spend the money I had saved for the expected remedial work on a new kitchen and laundry tiled floor I can't advise you which way to go with this, especially with the expected long wait for the fuel tank, and whether you buy something quickly to tide you over depends on your finances of course. Would anyone be able to offer you a lift in the meantime?
feemcg
A new fuel tank at only 5 years old seems a bit - I would not be pleased. OH has not had much luck with Fiats in the past and says Fiat stands for 'Fix it again Tony'!
craftyhunnypie
Oh what bad luck you're having! I've been getting various car brochures as I'm having a new car when I get back from my hols & I had the brochure this morning for the new fiat 500. But, I think I pass on fiats now. You must feel like absolute C..p! I know years ago I had a rover that was only 1 year old & the amount of work it needed was untrue! I was glad to get rid of it in the end! Well, my triumph spitfire which is 27 years old has just passed its MOT with flying colours (sorry to rub salt into the wound). But I am selling it now - I'm a bit fed up with my bum being on the ground whilst driving! I know I'll be upset when it goes & I'll be very choosy about who buys it. They have got to see it as a very special car. Hope all gets sorted for you! Emma.x
gooner.girl
I do sympathize Ali. Last Saturday my beloved first car 'Vera' a Vauxhall Astra got towed away by the s"Ooops, word censored!" men... We had spent hundreds on her in the past few months but in the end there was a problem that was gonna recur no matter how much it was fixed. We managed to buy a newer car off DH's parents but i was so sad to see my old one towed away - especially getting nothing for her after all the money we had spent. If i was clever with cars would have stripped her for parts and sold them on ebay - but i'm not! Anyhow as soon as you get a new reliable car something else will come along and eat your money up... In our case the cats both needed expensive veterinary treatment in past month (and another op for one next month too Sigh...)
ali-s
Have spent the afternoon on the net browsing local car dealerships for a new(er) car I will probably keep this one until the new year after all the money I have spent on it. I am on my 4th Fiat and up until now have been pleased with them. Emma I used to have a Spitfire called Scarlett (it was red ) It has holes in the fabric roof and no locks on the doors and I loved it I need OH to go round the car showrooms with me, as I have been dissmissing suitable cars because they are the wrong colour I have my mind set on bright yellow like my Seicento. I can always find it in the car park and it is fun watching the pupils at the school where I work beating each other up as I pass when they play yellow car no return
Prongs
Only 5 years old? People have cars that are like 10 years old that pass their mots without needing anything done

Helen&Lee
Do you live near the sea - could that have played a part in the deterioration? 5 years isn't long - but many mechanic's I know say that cars really aren't made to last nowadays... no consolation. We had a Freelander that had to have a new Head Gasket after 58,000.... just a £1000 and apparently all Freelanders had this problem Helen
craftyhunnypie
Yellow cars? What about the suzuki swift? Or the peugeot 107 or 1007. (peugeot 107 only £35 a year road tax) .Now all those are nice! Or a yellow mini one? Suppose it depends on the size of car you want. When I was a student...many moons ago now, I had a peugeot 106 (new) and a VW Beetle that I did up myself to impress a lad I was keen on at college! I adored my Beetle, it was Banana yellow! craftyhunnypie
I used to love the tiny glove box & the handle above it for your passengers to hold onto, when you felt like doing a few Herbie stunts! Emma.x
ali-s
What's yellow car no return? It is a game children play up here. If you see a yellow car you tap/hit the person next to you and say "yellow car no return" The game as been going on since I got my car five years ago and seems to have died out with the local children. Not so with the pupils at the boarding school where I work, and the "children" are in their late teens and should know better I will have to look at the yellow suzuki and Peugeot. I do live by the sea, but have never had this problem with any of the other cars we have owned.

Snowy
I'd love a Suzuki Swift! We bought a new Suzi Alto last year (as a second car - dead cheap to buy and run, also comes in yellow!) but there was a delay with it's delivery so they gave us a new Swift as a courtesy car. Apart from the fact that it was bright red with a fabulous white star radiating out from the roof and down the sides, it was very well equipped and very sporty. Lovely car! And very customisable
craftyhunnypie
I've ordered my new car today - went in the showroom to look & ended up ordering! I'm having a peugeot 107 Urban move in Black , with a spoiler as an extra!!!! They will probably be making it in France when we are there!!! he he . Will get it mid to end November. Can't wait!!!! superjules
I adored my Beetle, it was Banana yellow! Emma.x Mine was Gumdrop Orange I had an M reg orange beetle some years ago. On a frosty morning I used to have to s"Ooops, word censored!"e the inside of the windscreen as well as the outside! Everytime I indicated to turn right the fuse used to blow which meant the fuel indicator would stop working! I've always owned German or Japanese cars as I think they are generally more reliable than any others (except my poor beetle!). I had a Ford Escort as a company car once, it needed a new gearbox at 17k miles and then part of the engine fell off as I was driving the A1 on Xmas day, having just got it back from the garage the day before. It did help me meet my OH though as he lived in the same flats as me and I used to get him to jump start it every morning for me!! Ford = Fix Or Repair Daily (in my experience anyway!)
