Cinnamons new hens

Recommended Posts

I have been desperate to come on & tell you all about the hens I bought on Sunday, but, true to form ,my BT line got a fault on Friday & I have been stuck with no internet access. I can’t tell you how frustrated I have been!

Anyhow, we left on Saturday morning, & it took an hour & a half to get to Worldwide Poultry.

It’s a good place which I would recommend to anyone, with lots of lovely healthy birds running around all over the place. The chap is a mine of info. He’s quite traditional, but obviously knows his stuff.

He tends to chooses a hen for you, but is open if you prefer the look of another hen, as we did with out Leghorn/RIR cross. He picked us a plain white hen, but I loved anothers wonderful golden colouring, so we did a swap.

So, we now have these new members of our hen family –

Clover, a gorgeous Cream Legbar (blue eggs)

Bracken a beautifully marked & coloures Leghorn/RIR cross (Amber Star type, brown eggs)

Bramble a very pretty dark eyed French Maran (Darkest brown eggs)

& Fern a Light Sussex who The Hubby fell in love with (Brown eggs)

They were very well behaved in the car for the journey home & someone laid an egg in the box which was a great surprise when we opened it!

We had one more egg that day too, another mid brown one, so we reckon Bracken & Fern layed those for us.

They are currently in a sectioned off smallish area of the pen, so the old girls can see & get used to them. They are settling in pretty well, & I will leave them to sleep on their own toningt, but may mix things up the following night by putting 2 of the newbies in with the oldies & vice versa. My theory being that the oldies will get confused & not pick on anyone!

Lily who is the lowest in the pecking order has already had a pop at them through the wire, but I guess she has the most to play for, position wise.

I am delighted with them & have to stop myself from going out there every 5 minutes.

Oooh, how gorgeous. Glad you're pleased with them. Looking forward to seeing a pic of your maran when you get round to it.

I have tried, but she is never still for long enough

Just mid brown eggs so far, & I have a suspicion that the French Maran laid one of those, when she should be laying dark brown

Oh,& Christian,she doesn't have feathery legs,like some of the others did :?

The Cream Legbar Clover is the most nervous of the bunch & spends a lot of time hiding out in the Eglu, bless her.

She is right at the bottom of the pecking order, & I am keeping a sharp eye that she is eating & drinking without getting picked on.

On the first night 2 of them were roosting Al Fresco on the wire between the 2 pens & I had to post them through the egg port, but they seemed to get the hang of it a bit more last night :D

oooh, how lovely. I love your cream legbar, and the light sussex is pretty too, both on my wish list along with buff orpingtons, have to wait for OH to calm down after the dog (and the tortoise that I've got on my Christmas list!) How clever of them to be laying so soon as well, hope the intros go well,

So much for my keeping them apart for a week or 2 :?

I have just been to visit them to find the dividing fence has fallen over, & they are all in together

The new girls have gone into the oldies half, rather than the other way around too.................

I think its a big enough area for the new girls to escape if needs be, but I will be keeping a very close eye on things.

However, for the moment harmony reigns 8)

When I went to tuck them in last night they were all in one Eglu, apart from little Clover who was hanging around outside, looking worried

So I hoiked a couple out & put them in the blue Eglu with Clover.

All seems well this morning - no obvious injuries or anything, although Lily ,who is at the bottom of the pecking order, has been giving the new girls the odd beak to keep them below her :lol:

I am looking forward to seeing where they decide to sleep tonight 8)
