Sarah 2
We've decided to purchase a new vacuum cleaner. Except I never realised there is so much choice. We've got a Dyson at the moment but I'm not sure I want to get another one. Does anyone have a vacuum cleaner they would reccomend?
Egluntyne
I love my Dyson!
chelsea
I wouldnt buy anything other than a Dyson. I moan terribly that the Dysons are too heavy (they are! ) but nothing sucks up pet hair better than a dyson...and I have a lot of pet hair from my dog. If you have no pets maybe another make/model may suit
Cinnamon
I bought a SEBO Comfort a couple of years ago, after it was a brand recommended to me by a good friend & by John Lewis. It is apparantly the only brand JL will verbally recommend. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Its quiet, efficient, powerful and you can change all the filter once a year to keep it in tip top condition. They do cylinders, which I prefer,& uprights. Check them out on the JL website HERE
moochoo
We had a dyson, but had nothing but trouble with it and would certainly not buy another. When the dyson finally died I bought a very cheap Pro-Action one from Argos, just until we could afford something better. It has been the best vacuum I've ever had. It picks up brilliantly, it's filters work well,it's easy to empty and it has a fold down handle so it's easier to carry upstairs. It's Argos' own brand but made buy Morphy Richards Even though it was supposed to be a cheap fill in I love it and would definitely buy another. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4053194/Trail/searchtext%3EPRO+ACTION.htm It's currently £39.99! The Dogmother
I've got a Tesco own brand cylinder vacuum inherited from my folks when they upgraded - the cylinder is easy to clean and the filters all just wash clean under the tap - small and easy to carry, it works well for me. Ziggy
I've had dysons and was never happy with them... I bought one and didn't like it, when it broke down I bought another smaller one, cause I was stubborn and convinced that the 'no bag' thing was the best thing on earth, and again had nothing but trouble with it, constant overheating even after endless filter replacements and other problems. My sister-in-law always used a Henry, and was envious of my dyson... well for the last four years I've had a Henry, and I've been very happy with it... it's straightforward, nothing amazing, but nothing much to go wrong with either, just plain and reliable... and not so expensive to replace once it does expire!! Tessa the Duchess
I inherited my mother's almost brand new LG cylinder cleaner. It is the best cleaner I have ever had. Brilliant with dog hair. I have had expensive and cheap cleaners, but this is the best. Also heard good things about the Henry from friends. Tessa
Sarah 2
Thanks for all the quick replies. Tempted by the Sebo upright. But it does look ugly. No pets just children so need something reliable. Moochoo £39.95 for a vacuum cleaner that is definitely a bargain. Might just have to have a look. feemcg
I've had 3 Dysons over the years and the best one by far was the 1st one they ever brought out - the other 2 were rubbish. I'm currently using a Vax Turbo which is heavy and clumsy and.......I just hate hoovering (my OH loves his Henry ).
The Dogmother
I've heard bad things about Dysons too. Phil has a Henry and a Vax and loves them both.
Guest
We have 2 Dysons and an old Henry tha was left behind by the previous owners. The cleaner prefers Henry.
chelsea
The cleaner prefers Henry. I've never got on with the Henry, we got away a lot in self catering cottages and you always find they keep Henry's in the cottages an awful lot (maybe because he's cute ) but I find he doesnt pick up pet hair like a Dyson - unless my dog has got stubborn hair (which is more likely )
lisa33
I love my Dyson. I would never buy any other type of vacuum cleaner.
chickenlass
Well I have an Animal Dyson and although I like it ..I do find it heavy to lug about... the recoil on the extension pipe for doing stairs etc is positively vicious so a few months ago I bought a cylinder Miele [sp]? . which I now keep upstairs[ saves me having to tug the upright up the stair case. If I were to by another Dyson I would get the cylinder type as I find them more versatile.
chrisnrob
Dysons are interesting because they consistently come out poorly in Which? tests. However, we have a DC04 upright and the new hand-held and are very pleased with them. I have yet to meet someone who isn't happy with their Dyson. However, as this forum shows, those people are out there. I wonder why it seems to be love or loathe with Dyson...? Rob
Egluntyne
I love my Dyson! It is ancient....a DCO4 purple and yellow number. The stuff it shifts is astonishing.....and I don't have asthma attacks when I am using it...whereas with previous vacuum cleaners I have often had to stop as the wheezing got out of hand after about 20 mins. It also leaves suction stripes in the carpet....which I like. So when Him indoors tips up home and tries the "what have you done today" routine I merely point to the floor. cammy73
I did have Dysons and sfter my first one went out and got a second one...but the second one was awful..never cleaned as well as the first, which was a DC02. The second one was an animal, but it never picked the dog hairs up properly!!! Just bought an up right Vax and I must say I'm very impressed!! You are like my sister, when we house/dog sit for her and I hoover Im instructed to hoover the carpet in a certain way as she likes her pile going a certain direction!! Christian
I have a Miele from JL! It was expensive (£200ish) but it is wonderful! It is a cylinder with long hose and several attachments, 6 power settings for floors/carpet/rugs etc and does the job really well. Have had Dysons, Hoover, Morphy Richards and this is the best! 2 years warranty at JLs!!! p.s Slattern - a dirty, untidy woman. I had to google! One Man Banned
We have a Dyson and this is our second. It's one Joe got from JL with 5 year warranty and free tool, plus it was on offer at £175, same one at Currys £245! It does the job really well, as Molly's fur tends to hang on for dear life but a couple of sweeps gets it up I must admit to feeling a bit slattern myself somedays tho Never heard that word before, sounds lovely doesn't it A xx

Rona
I also bought a Sebo upright on recommendation of next door neighbour and it is the best vacuum I have ever had. I don't find it ugly, just plain and u"Ooops, word censored!"trusive and it does its job well without any messing about. I particularly like the easy way you can pull the hose out to run round the skirting or get into corners. And because the dirt gets compacted into the bag it lasts for ages before you have to change it
