cruisa
Does anyone label their eggs with the date? If so, what do you use? I'd imagine some marker pen ink might ingress through the shell into the actual egg. I've only had my two hens for a couple of days, so I haven't actually had any eggs to collect yet. ~cruisa~
Jules.
I use pencil. Some people also put the name of the chook who laid it, & the weight on.
Tara123
I use and pencil and add the name of the hen who's laid it and the date. Sometimes I can't always add the name, because I'm not always sure who's laid it, if I'm out, so that egg usually gets a ? put on it
Egluntyne
Just a pencil mark on the top of the egg.
Olly
I pencil the date on - then when I give them away, I try and do it in date order. Also, it's quite nice if it's someone's birthday, say, to give them the eggs laid on that day! I have got a little rubber stamp with a chicken on, but it's too big really - doesn't fit the 'curve' of the egg so I don't bother using it much. Jules.
I give away birthday eggs, too, Olly!
Eyren
When I had one standard hybrid (laying daily) and one bantam, I didn't bother labelling my eggs - I just put any excess in Omlet boxes and sold them as soon as I had a full box. Now I have three bantams all laying sporadically, I like to keep track of how old the eggs are! I write the date on in pencil, but since their eggs all look very similar, identifying them is basically guesswork so I don't bother with names... Snowy
I write the name on Beryl's eggs. There is a lady down the road whose Mum is called Beryl so she likes a box of Beryl eggs as a treat for her!
Cinnamon
Mine are dated in pencil too, & I write the name of the layee
Ain't Nobody Here
I write the date on with pencil. Mine are already colour coded so names not required .
cruisa
Thanks for the replies Pencil it is then. As I say, I have to have an egg first to write on ~cruisa~
Flo
I too write the date on mine in pencil. I also weigh them and record it on an egg chart (I think there is a whole other post about this) I don't name them, but my friends and famliy like guessing which chicken laid which egg! jomaxsmith
My hens lay distinct coloured eggs so I know who laid what. I weigh and record them in my house diary then put them in a 12 hole egg box in the fridge. I move the eggs in the box so that the oldest ones are always at the front. I rarely have more than 12 in the house at one time I know they are only a couple of days old! Chicken keeping offers so much potential for the anally retentive among us! crazygal
Chicken keeping offers so much potential for the anally retentive among us! Jo hear hear! I keep opening the box where mine are and count them, and shuffle them to the left as they get eaten so the oldest are on the left and the freshest are on the right... chili pepper
With 6 of us in the house and lots of friends and family we never have eggs more than a couple of days, but i know what you mean Crazygal, I keep mine in one of those old fashioned brown ceramic chickens (1970's) and I often open it just to look at the eggs and can't resist a hold too...its so sad Maybe I need to see someone about this

moochoo
I usually take eggs to work to sell on a Tuesday. Yesterday I was running late and forgot to take them. I was met with lots of sad faces and one of my work mates said "Sainsbury's eggs aren't the same my husband wants to know the name of the chicken that laid it". It's obviously worth the few extra seconds it takes for me to date and name all my eggs in pencil
The Dogmother
I get that too Sarah, the lad next door always says thank you to the hen who laid his morning egg.
cruisa
I've still got my pencil at the ready (lol) No eggs as yet, but its only day four. Maybe its because I haven't give them a name yet. I seen that someone has a couple of hens called Millie & Mollie. I like the sound of that, so I may name them Millie & Mollie ~cruisa~
The Dogmother
Ahhh, but then you need 3 so that you have Millie Mollie Mandy as per the childrens' books.

Yes, I think that's where I seen them I was going to call them Penny & Cynthia, after my mother in-laws two friends, but was told that they might not be that impressed with that. Pinkybijou
I've just been to a craft fair this weekend and found a fabulous rubber stamp which says, "Made Just For You" - in a half moon shape - HOW PERFECT??? Now all I need is a blimming egg!!! I'll try and add a pic of it here if I can - rather sadly, stamped onto a drawn picture of an egg - because, did I mention - I HAVE NO EGGS!!!! hmmm, now how do I add a pic? just off to find out how............... hmmm, don't think I can add it directly here, so I've put it under 'owners' on the gallery and here's the link: http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=24530 Kris Dora, Welsummer Doris, Wyandotte
