Guest
he's got a water infection now which they're saying is adding to his confusion, he still hasn't snapped out of it yet and thought he was driving his car in bed. Ian told him he was in our car and that seemed to settle him a bit. Mum has stayed with him and we're going back later. It's so exhausting all this to'ing and fro'ing and the visitng times are stupid! 3pm-4.30pm and 7pm to 8.30pm so we get home for about an hour and then have to go back. We're living on sandwiches at the moment but what can you do
Helly Welly
Rest when you can Poet and try to get some hot food inside you, maybe make some flasks of soup you can have 'on the go'? I'm sorry to hear your Dad is still not brilliant, but he'll hopefuilly improve a bit each day. Are they going to give him antibiotics for the water infection or will that make him more confused? Drinking lots will help and it doesn't have to be water, his favourite drink will do him more good, although not whiskey!!
Rona
I am so sorry to hear he has had another set back. Hopefully, they have him on the right medication/treatment and he'll soon be on the mend again. Wish I could bring you a big bowl of veggie soup, but a virtual one will have to do. Do make sure you try and take time to look after yourself. Egluntyne
Sorry to hear about the waterworks infection Poet......it could very well account for his confusion in part. From a visitors point of view the visiting hours must be very frustrating, but from the patients point of view it can be exhausting to have visitors there continually, especially immediately post op. Plenty of rest will do him the world of good. All the best. Try to get a proper meal if you can...you will feel much better for it.
chickenlass
Hello Justine....I was just wondering if there was any way you could stagger your visiting at all. When John's mum was ill in hospital we got so tired going back and forwards that in the end we took it in turns.... one doing the afternoon and one the evening. [i'm just concerned for your own health as you will be stressed anyhow.] Sending another hug. x
Ain't Nobody Here
So sorry to hear about your dad's infection, Poet . That's what my dad had and it can really make the elderly seem very poorly. If he's on antibiotics he should get better within a few days. I agree, you need to be careful you don't overdo it with the visiting. I know you want to visit him at every available opportunity but perhaps you don't have to be there all together at every single visit. Is your mum able to manage visiting on her own? Or perhaps Ian could take her then you go the next time? You know I'm in the same situation with regard to hospital visiting - I'm starting to realise that you have to start thinking about your own health (and sanity!). Realistically, it's very difficult to keep going twice a day. If your dad is poorly, he will be perfectly happy to see someone once a day. Sending you all best wishes - I know what you're going through.
Joojoo
you have to start thinking about your own health (and sanity!). Realistically, it's very difficult to keep going twice a day. If your dad is poorly, he will be perfectly happy to see someone once a day. I second that!! You need to take care of yourself as you'll be no good to anyone if you end up totally worn out. Your Dad will know how much you care about him, but will understand that you can't be everywhere at the same time. Have some "Poet" time YOU deserve it!! Love & Best Wishes Jue x
Lesley
Hopefully the waterworks infection will soon be sorted out. Do take time to rest Poet.

Guest
i'm so tired i haven't read all of your replies but i will t'row and it's so kind of you to reply. We've been there since 7pm and just got home now (10.30pm). We had to stay because he was so restless and the nurses just don't have time to give him the care he needs. During the shift changeover, there wasn't a nurse to be seen! They said if he kept trying to get out of bed and pull his tubes out then they'd have to put him on a mattress on the floor and nurse him from the floor. So mum and me stayed while they gave him a sleeping tablet and he eventually drifted off and we waited to make sure he was peaceful. I'm surprised anyone can get any sleep in that hospital with the banging of doors, bins, nurses shouting to each other, laughing, singing etc. I know it's a stressful and horrible job but they seem to think they're in the pub!? There's no consideration for patients who are trying to rest/sleep They've also put him in his own side room now so I hope they do keep an eye on him. I think they've put him there as he was disturbing the other patients on his ward but at least the other patients looked out for him and called a nurse if there was a problem. There's an old man in the bed opposite my dad who has 1 leg, they left him on a commode on his own and he fell on the floor and is now semi conscious and has a massive wound on his forehead! I've told the nurse that if dad starts to try and get out of bed and they can't calm him down then they're to phone me and I'll come back. It's the only way I can make sure he's okay! I'm sorry to say but I just don't have much faith in the care he's getting I've started smoking again Gave up 2 years ago and I know what you're going to say s'pose I'd better eat something, don't worry about me, I can always sleep during the day if I need to. The chickens are being well looked after, the only thing suffering is the housework. We're knee deep in dirty washing but I don't care! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh my word, you poor thing . It sounds awful . I won't bore you with details but I can sympathise with all you're saying. I have to say, though, it did get better and I now feel quite confident in the care my dad's getting. I hope it is soon the same for you . Please take care of yourselves - I know it's difficult, but it's really important. AND PUT THAT CIGARETTE OUT, YOU BAD GIRL . Snowy
Oh no Poet, what an awful time for you. But you've got to look after yourself to get you and Dad through this. Make sure you do get some rest and food - you will be no good to him if you are a wreck!! It will get better, you've just got to get through it - and you will! Big Hugs, make sure you do get some sleep tonight, will be praying for you. xx (and pack in those cigarettes!!)
Egluntyne
Poor "Dad". I hope he has had a peaceful night and that you can see some improvement today.
Lesley
I hope you've all had a peaceful night. Stay off the ciggies Poet! - they're not going to solve anything and will only give you more problems in the end. Buy chewing gum?
freddie
Had all this with mum , and the lack of care etc, it's horrendous. Get stroppy, treat them with the "respest" that they are giving the patients, and it's all the patients, I feel so awful for you, as have been there so recently. I fought like a wildcat on mum's behalf, and it did make a difference, but I was really not well myself at the end of the time. Please take care of yrself. take any help offered, and try to get rest yrself. I wish I could help you out, I really do. My thoughts are with you through this time in all your lives. baby bears mum
Oh Poet. So sorry to hear all you and yours are going through. I totally agree with Freddie. If the staff know you are not going to take things lying down they do seem to pay more attention. It's a horrible thing to say isn't it but it really is true. Take care of yourself. Sending you and your Dad and Mum huge hugs. With love,
MedusA
Hope things improve soon, Poet. The urine infection would make him disorientated too, but usually responds quite quickly to antibiotics. Try to get some rest yourself and as an ex-nurse, please don't think we're all like that. I can't abide the unprofessisonalism of some nurses today either. I never had time to joke around, I was too busy caring for the 36 patients on my ward, which often only had 3-4 of us on duty on a late or night shift! Guest
we went at 3pm and he was very peaceful, had his own PJs on (not the hospital ones which I'm sure he's more comfy in) he was asking about my sister's new job (I mentioned on here ages ago she was moving back to L'pool to live on a boat and she's got a job in Aintree) he was asking whether my mum's sister and brother in law were coming to visit and he was really lucid and asking relevant questions and answering what he was asked. He'd been bathed and shaved and made very comfortable with pillows under his feet and he has one of those special beds that avoid bed sores etc. He'd had some lunch and just looked quite comfy. He had a bit of a sleep while we were there too. Went back at 7pm and he was still lucid and had had some sausage casserole and a bit of banana for his tea, he had an oxygen mask on as his chest is a bit bad at the moment, he can't cough because of his op so the physio has been to try and help him clear his chest and he's had anti biotics for his water infection. we bought him a card for his TV and he watched a bit of the liverpool V aresenal game and he seemed quite comfortable. We offered to stay with him (the doctor said because he was in his own room that we could stay as long as we wanted and come and go whenever we felt like it so that was a relief) but dad told us to go home had a word with the nurse on the way out and she said he slept for about 9 hours last night, he did wake up shouting "help" at one point so they put him in the corridor in his bed so they could keep an eye on him and apparently he was fine after that. He seems to have come out of the fug he was in so now he can concentrate on getting well, we're all so relieved! The weird thing is, as we were driving home last night, a black cat ran across the road in front of the car. When I got home this afternoon, a black cat ran across out path in front of my car and driving home tonight, a black cat ran across the road in front of our car. I've always considered that to be good luck and 3 times in 24 hours is too often to be a coincidence Mum said she found a white feather on their path last night too! I really think your prayers and good wishes have been heard so I'm sending a massive THANK YOU out to you all
