update on dad- up and down

Recommended Posts

thank you for remembering.

we took him to the hospital this afternoon and stayed while they did an echocardiagram and then took him up to the ward. We went back late this afternoon/early evening to visit him. He'd had his tea and they'd given him an enema. Trouble is, he's virtually deaf (which my mum explained to the nurse) and he thinks he's heard what he's been asked and will often answer a completely different question.

When we arrived, he was on a commode. When the nurse asked him if he'd "managed okay" he said yes but he hadn't wiped himself and the nurse didn't check, just pulled his PJ bottoms back up  So mum had to take him to the toilet and clean him up. I hope this is a one off as mum has stressed to the nurse about his deafness

So far, the op is scheduled for around 2pm tomorrow.

The man in the bed next to him had a colostomy bag and I think he reassured my dad somewhat. Last time my dad had one, it kept coming loose but I think they've improved them since he had his last op so I'm hoping he's not worrying as much as he was about it all.

When he comes out of the op, they're putting him on the high dependency ward to monitor him.

That's all I can tell you so far but I'm touched you guys remembered. Thanks for your good wishes.

Hope it goes OK. Look after yourselves (hope Ian got over his flu?)

thank you xxxx

yes, he's almost back to normal thanks, just a bit of a cough at the moment. He made me laugh today, there was a sign in the hospital that said "Don't forget to wash your hands between patients" and Ian said "I normally do them with soap" . Thank god for him, he's a huge comfort and support.

Right, I should go to bed but I'm drinking whisky and feel wide awake, I'll drag myself off in a bit

speak to you soon hun

 Comments like that are just what you need sometimes to take a little of the stress away.

Hope everything goes well, will keep my fingers crossed.

Take care,

with all good thoughts from us too; do keep reminding the staff re: hearing shortfall; there are so many shifts, these things get missed. Is it poss to put up a small sign saying hard of hearing? We did for mum, also, she had a hearing aid, but often the staff had turned it off/ not put itin/ etc....

it's c...p getting old.

I'm exhausted :( Dad had his op this morning but isn't coming round from the anasthetic very well. He's conscious but very confused and keeps trying to pull his cannulas and catheter out and trying to get out of bed. He keeps asking us if we're ready to go home as he thinks he's coming with us. Mum and me had to keep grabbing his hands and trying to stop him getting out of bed etc. We've been twice today. My sister is taking mum for the first visit t'row and then we're taking her for the second visit. They'll only allow 2 people into the HDU at one time so there's no point us all going at the same time.

On a more positive note, the surgeon is very happy with how the op went, he said the tumour was very small and doesn't appear to have spread to his liver (which they were worried about) and he thinks my dad is strong and will make a good recovery. He has a good colour in his cheeks and hcertainly is strong, I know from trying to get him to stay in bed ;)

Right, I'm off to have my tea. Thanks so much for all the good wishes, I'll keep you posted but fingers x'd, the worst bit is out of the way!
