chickenlass
That must have been so distressing for you. I'm shocked that you have been burgled too to add to your trauma. That is so sad that the neighbours dog seems to be pining for your dog too.
Basset
Bertie, So Sorry to hear of your sad loss, what a lovely idea to keep a memory box. Dogs become such a huge part of your life that it is so difficult when their time comes. We lost our previous fantastic dogs about 18months ago, and the house felt so empty and we had never been without a dog, so we quickly decided to get another dog. To be honest, for us it was too quick, I think we should have waited longer. Sending you my best wishes,
Olly
So sad - it does sound as though whatever he had was fairly fundamental though, but at least he didn't suffer a long illness. You will know when it's right to get another one. It doesn't mean you don't miss your old fella, in fact it's a tribute to what a great dog he was, that you want to fill the enormous gap left behind. Sunshine
When our dog had to be put to sleep because of cancer we all knew it was going to happen which definately helped because we were able to say goodbye(i think we used 2 disposable cameras of pictures) But we definately rushed into getting another dog and we had to take him back to the rescue centre because he just wasn't suitable for us-was sick for any car journey that you took him on, used to wee in the house and could jump over the compost heap to the cricket field(about 4/5ft). We did hear that he had been rehomed on an isolated farm where he could run to his hearts content and hardly ever have to travel in the car. Then we decided to get a puppy which was much better as we could train her and she is very good apart from she can't be left anywhere because she will just bark and bark until you return. I'm dreading the day when either we come downstairs in the morning and she has died or if she has to suddenyl be put to sleep like in your situation. I seem to have blabbled quite a lot but i understand how you feel and how empty a house can feel without a dog wandering about. Emma
Scary Mary
I'm so sorry, I cried so much when I lost my dog that I had sores under my eyes. Huge hugs to you, you will know in your heart when to get another dog. Love Mary
Ain't Nobody Here
I've only just found this post. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss . I can't imagine how it would feel if we lost Riley but I dread it happening, even if it's years from now. A memory box sounds like a lovely idea and walking his pal might help too. Can't advise about getting another dog but perhaps you'll know when you see a particular dog that needs rehoming. My whole family were away for two days recently and, I have to say, the only one I really missed was the dog .

TrishY
I am so sorry and I did exactly the same when I lost my first dog - I left her bowls and bed down for a week. I cried constantly. A lady who ran the local rspca centre suggested I went to visit not with the intention of taking a dog but I met sootie there and went home and lifted pickle's bowls and bed and put new down for when sootie came home after the home check. When sootie died 11 years later I didn't get another dog for a year as I didn't feel I could go through it again when I got pip from an advert in the yellow paper. Shirl
So sorry to hear you lost him. There's no love like the love a dog gives and I'm sure you gave the same in return. Think of the good times.
MedusA
I am so sorry to hear your sad news. It's like losing a friend, isn't it? I missed my lovely Cocker Spaniel for years after he had to be put down. He had insulin-dependent diabetes, heart failure and was virtually blind, but we adored him. *hugs*

Is is the worst thing about having such a loved pet - having to say goodbye. Gamebird
So sorry to hear about your loss. I know how devastating it feels. I lost my first dog 18 months ago and his brother died last summer. I have had them cremated and their ashes still sit on my mantlepiece in oak caskets. They become so much a part of the family that it is very hard to let go. I still have my 3 year old black labrador who is an absolute joy but each dog is an individual and always missed. The pain is eventually replaced by good, but never forgotten, memories.
