That darn cat (happy update!)

Recommended Posts

A few of you will recall that my Bengal cross cat Chilli often goes 'walkabout' for 2 or 3 days at a time, worrying me sick in the process.

Just 2 weeks ago he returned from a 4 day jaunt.

When he comes back he is so affectionate & pleased to see us.He follows me around & chats in little mews to me all the time ,bless :D

Well this time he has now not been home for 6 days & I am beside myself with worry. I have knocked on local doors & been out to check the road verges in case the worst has happened. We live on a quiet but fast country lane :?

Hubby & daughters just say that he will be back soon, but its beginning to really worry me that he has been gone for so long.

My other worry is that he has another Mum somewhere - some bat is feeding him & keeping him for herself

He has often come home in the past with the name tag removed from his collar,or his whole collar removed.

I miss him.He is my daytime company & I just want him home.

That is such a worry Sarah :(

I would be beside myself if Teddy or Poppy ever went missing

Can you do a leaflet drop in your area and call into the vets and local rescue centres?

I do hope he hasnt got another mum who is trying to keep him but it does sound suspicious considering he has returned home with no collar :?

Edited to change the sex of your cat!:lol:

I think you're right to be suspicious. He's a beautiful boy, and if he's come back without collar or nametag, someone else is probably trying to steal him. Given that he is a valuable cat, have you considered reporting it to the police?

Well, I hadn't thought of that as I don't know who it is for sure,or if its anyone at all.......

I have tried a tag with 'do not feed' on it & I have tried a note in a barrel tag too.

All I do know is that if/when I do find out who it is I shall be giving them quite a mouthful

I have him chipped for extra security too. Hubby think he lives 'wild' in this nice weather in all the woods we have around, but when he is home he is such a homey cat that I find this hard to believe.

Fingers crossed everyone,please :pray::pray::pray:

I hope he is back soon Sarah. I used to have aBirman that went walkabout - he went once for a week and was found a couple of miles away by a family who finally managed to get close enough to read his tag. He might have been friendly when he was at home but he was very timid out of his area. Lets hope chilli is home soon and someone isnt giving him a second home

Coming home regularly without a collar doesn't necessarily mean anything. The older of our two cats used to remove any collar within about an hour of getting out so we just have both cats chipped. But I can't imagine how a cat is getting a tag off a collar  Sounds like someone else is trying to tempt him away !

Aw, this is awful.

My cat often comes home with a missing collar and then we find them stuck down rabbit holes or fences.

CHECK YOUR SHED AND GARAGE is what I reccomend, my dad has shut Oscar in the shed TWICE and the last time he was stuck in there for 2 days!

Keep calling him, shake his biscuits and that's all I can really help with.

*My fingers are firmly crossed*

Hi Sarah,

Hubby could be right. One of my boys used to go off not for days but the whole day and he's the most homely boy you could imagine when he's in, a real kittenish kind of cat. I once went looking for him and found him hunting in some trees. I called him and it was like he couldn't hear me, I got within a few feet of him and called him again and he still didn't hear me. Then when he did see me, his whole attitude changed and he became "my" cat again. I think they are very different animals when they are out in the country...

I am crossing everything for you that he's ok, I know how much you love him, and I can't imagine what you are going through. He'll probably turn up in the next day or so as if nothing had happened and wonder what all the fuss is about. I hope so. Sending you hugs.

It's awful when they go missing - the fact that he often 'goes walkabout' would reassure me though, this is just a bit longer than usual. Good idea to do some leaflets and check sheds etc, but in this warm weather my cat is spending a lot more time outside hunting.

One of my cats (a few years back) kept disappearing, and I was very worried. Eventually he reappeared with a new collar with a note attached, saying 'is this your cat?'. He'd just moved in with someone else round the corner, and they genuinely believed he'd been abandoned as I lived in a student area and term had just finished. They were amazed to hear that he had free access day and night with a cat-flap.

I wouldn't necessarily suggest someone is trying to steal Chilli, but he is a lovely cat and they may just have been tempted to feed him and he's enjoying having two homes, like 'Six Dinner Sid'. I would never, ever feed another cat unless it was obviously a stray, but unfortunately some people have no common sense in this regard.

I hope he returns soon, and when he does I'd be inclined to keep him in for a while. I'd have him microchipped, if that hasn't already been done - then if anyone took him to the vet, they would check the details.

Phew, glad he's back! Bet you're spoiling him rotten.

I mentioned the microchip thing, because it does prove ownership. When I adopted my cat and took him to the vet for the first time, they scanned him and discovered he'd already been chipped. They kept me waiting in the consulting-room while they rang the chip company - I had nightmare visions of them keeping him and refusing to let me take him home! Fortunately the chip (done by a previous owner) had been re-registered to the cat sanctuary, but if anyone WAS trying to adopt him and took him to the vet for the first time, they'd certainly scan him. Might be worth doing.

I hope this isn't the case, and that actually he's just a wanderer with a good knack for finding food.
