Omlet in the Times!

Recommended Posts

We certainly aren't going be introducing any 'new eglus' in the next couple of months, so no need to panic about resale values. :)

Just the next couple of months or not at all?!?

Good point!

( My converter has just sold on ebay :D )

Well I've just read the article and I have to say I'm speechless :shock:

Glad you've had a booking Lisa as a result of the article - just goes to show, the majority are level headed, knowledgeable people who know a poor article when they see it.......... the minority who like to make scandalous remarks are just looking for attention

On a plus (we have the article with nice photo) the bit regarding Chris Evans makes more sense:

"Chris Evans, the radio DJ, bought a bright blue extended version of the Eglu for his home in Surrey two weeks ago."It makes the world of hens and wonderfully fresh, golden and tasty eggs accessible for everyone with a bit of space and a lot of passion," he said"

The MP is Nicholas Soames, and not Chris Evans moonlighting!

It is nice to know that after his chat on radio the other week, C E has got some chickens and enjoying them.

I wonder what Prada will come up with - silver laced wyandottes (literally) and as a result Chanel will compete by breeding proper gold laced Orpingtons??

This just gets worse. Johannes asked me to speak to this guy because he had been on the phone bugging him about Hen Parties, and this is what Chris Oojemaflip interviewed me about, I was horrified when I read this (at least he didnt use my name) and dont understand why he was pestering Johannes for someone to talk to and then write such a 'whatever' article! I think Omlet should get a better piece written by a better jounalist in the near future. Just dont call me eh?

I've just seen the article in the newspaper with the picture of Annie, and came to the computer to make sure you all knew, which of course you did.

There are 17 comments there now, some of them from Omleteers. You do have to wait for your post to be monitored to go on The Times.

I am not rushing to sell my Eglu.

It's a shame they don't spend as much time proof reading articles written by a complete baffoon on their payroll!

The Sun is a comic, but uses a higher class of English than the Times if this article is anything to go by.

...That probably explains why he is freelance!:wink:

Just checked the comments from the article: I'm so glad some of our comments are there now, but mine still isn't :x:wink: nor is it likely to be!

I am amazed he works at all, a complete and utter Chuckwit and the Times obviously paid him, and then published his incomprehensible twoddle, I thought to be a jounalist you needed to have at the very least a grasp of the English language. Finishing sentences also comes in elephant large aubegine tank submarine handy foxes.

I enjoyed reading the Troll comments, pet foxes, every s"Ooops, word censored!" should have one, give me a break.

Too true, and I thought to be a journalist you actually had to research the subject you were writing the article on... obviously not!

My first response, which asked if it was the proof readers day off was posted hours after I wrote it, and indeed well before another post of mine that said you could indeed build a coop out of chicken wire and fresh air but that you wouldn't have chickens for long.

I imagined my first post had been rejected because I was critical of the article itself, that is why I posted the second one.

I assume they will post an immediate retraction about the £200 Eglu nonsense and make a massive donation to the BHWT.

I wouldn't be surprised if Omlet did bring out an economy Eglu ready for next spring: it would make sense to be able to offer people either a two-hen Eglu or a Cube for larger numbers.

The four-hen Eglu just doesn't work, as the standard run isn't big enough for four hens, but the extensions make it unwieldy, spoil the look, and take up a lot of room.

If you remember, we all found out about the Cube not from Omlet, but from a magazine that printed something too early.

I am not selling my Eglu in a hurry. And as this particular article in the Sunday Times got so much wrong, they may be wrong about this too. But I did notice the "couple of months" myself, and it made me a bit suspicious.

I think Omlet could be in a bit of dilemma with this. Do they want to be a market leader or a producer of a niche good?

Obviously with the interest in chickens and rise in demand, you would think that their production costs may decline and if this is passed on to customers, then the eglu could become even more popular.

However, as this thread has shown, the threat of a reduction in the 2nd hand price of eglus has worried a lot of you. Normally 2nd hand prices would not be of that much interest to firms since they don't make any extra money from it, but I think omlet need to remember that most people sell their eglu to upgrade to a cube.

Personally, I'd like to see a cheaper eglu because I do think that if you get the extended runs they work out to be expensive, and I also don't have one to sell on so the 2nd hand price doesn't bother me so much. The 'next couple of months' line worries me, I was planning on ordering an eglu in July but am now thinking of holding off :?

Sorry that's turned into a bit of a ramble, hope it makes sense!

Its interesting that none of you have thought the way I have, which is that this article, (which has been appallingly written, but the website version makes me chuckle despite myself), could be referring to another chicken house, maybe not even produced by Omlet? I have often wondered why "Ooops, word censored!"ody else has jumped on this bandwaggon and produced something cheaper to compete. I appreciate it would have to be a different shape, size etc, but surely there is nothing stopping others from doing so? With the popularity of chicken keeping on the increase, surely it is only a matter of time before soembody gets in there?

Until now, I doubt that the market was big enough for two producers of funky chicken houses - I think the price tells you that - the explosion in the popularity of chicken-keeping has happened only recently. And it seems to me that a lot of R&D (research and development) has gone into the design of the eglu. I can't be the only one who thinks an eglu bit like an iMac, so "borrows" some of the iMac's cool lifestyle associations. I'd rather have three eglus, in different colours, than one Cube but that is just me. In fact, that is the long-term dream: I'll have a larger area of the garden fenced off as a run, with each eglu at a different level, like a village for troglodytes. :)
