Lost another chicken

Recommended Posts

Hi

This is just to update our other thread we have now lost our smallest girl who has had her feathers fluffed up since the day that we had her. We would like to thank the members of this forum who kindly helped us with there advice.

I had been giving the little lady water via a syringe as she has been in the same place in the run all day fast asleep, so i brought her into the house and gave her some more water, though she could not keep her eyes open, her breathing was very noisey and sounded as if it was crackling, i lay her down in some straw and watched over her, i saw her wing move, she seemed to stretch her little neck and then her young life was over.

This has really saddened us especially since we have lost two chickens in less than a week sold to us by an arrogant dealer. Barbara from omlet if you read this thread, please email us and i will give you the deatails that you asked for the other day.

My other ladies seem ok, they are much bigger than the two that we have lost.

"What a start to keeping chickens",

Oh dear... Like everyone has said.. what a horrid thing to have happened and once again within a short period a time.

You have my sympathies indeed, however, like some of the other posts here suggesting some action with this breeder/seller you should follow some rules.

Firstly I realise that this will be a tad back dated now as you wer`nt to know, but try to think back:

1: Condition of farm/place that you purchased your hens from.

2: Were you able to pick your hen from the flock? or was one brought out to you ..sight unseen as it were?

3: What are your gut impressions of the place?

4: What is the reaction from said breeder/farmer to this your second death in such a short period of time.

5: For your own good, check everything that you have for your hens, can they access anything poisonous? Check the other hens for virul infection.

Keep an eye on the defra site, I don`t know where you live, but its always worth checking Defra for updates as well as the poultry council, also if this place is a farm then it wouldnt hurt contacting defra and asking their advice.

If its a chicken breeder then the poultry council as its not exactly a farmy matter.

I grew up on a farm down in sussex and I know for a fact that farms and the animals therin do not need to be *smelly..dirty or anything like that, as for items / livestock being sold from a farm or breeder again the overall place should have an air of cleanliness, I dont mean in the way you would keep a kitchen but at least not dark /dank ...downright unwholesomness.!

Once again I`m so very sorry.

Michelle.

So sorry to hear about your poor little girls - what a horrible breeder - I hope you get somewhere towards preventing others suffering like you and your chicks.

I am sure that things can only look up from here and that you'll soon be a happy chicken keeper just as you first wished! :)

Keep your chin up.

love

Sue
