Poorly Poppet - UPDATE RIP Poppet

Recommended Posts

My Poppet (Ex bat) looks like she is on the way out. She is the batty who was ill earlier in the year but has been fine since antibiotics were prescribed. We came back from holiday last week and noticed that she was drooping her wings a little but she was as lively as ever - today she has been "mumpy" with droopy wings.

I picked her up to look at her and there is NOTHING of her - she has definately lost weight - boney and I can't feel a lovely full crop. She had no fight in her either. She's gone and laid down in the run now and I think we will be saying goodbye to her rather than goodnight today.

She has had a lovely 5 months with us and felt the sun on her wings again today.

What a shame if it is the end, but what a fantastic way to die rather than the undignified terrible end of some of her friends. She's a lucky hen to have been cared for and loved. I hope she does pull through but I think I can feel in your text that you know she's had the best life an ex-batt can hope for.

Fingers crossed

TBH I hope she fades away in the night. She had a couple of moments when the treats were about where she perked up a bit. But she ran out for treats and fell over, she then stood around outside for a while then when it was bedtime slowly came over and pecked some corn with the others.

I realised she was probably too weak to get up the cube ladders and the Eglu is on the lawn with new girls in so she couldn't sleep in there. So I waited till they had all tucked up in bed then left Bella roosting on the broody cage (what is that about?) and moved 4 girls from the purple cube to the green one. Then I got Poppet who was in the very corner of the run, near the green cube and popped her in the Purple cube on her own, she snuggled into the corner of the nesting box. I've left the purple cube shut (we usually leave them both open) so she can't try and come out as I don't think she'd be able to get down the ladder.

Having picked her up again I realised just how light she has become, she is all bone and no weight at all but I have seen her eating several times today. She also has a bit of a grotty botty, although I'm sure she doesn't have worms as I've recently treated them with Flubenvet.

Well she made it through the night and came out of the Cube looking very poorly this morning - we have a platform at the entrance and Mum gave her corn and water on there - she even pecked some corn from Mums hand.

Mum left her there but a while later she somehow had come down and was stood in the entrance to our run, head down, eyes closed. She since has gone into the run and laid down behind a pot to die. But every time I go down there she is still breathing, she hasn't moved and doesn't open her eyes but there is still life and the last time I stroked her she moved her head a little.

I have to say if I knew how to end it for her I would try and find it within myself to just do it. I know I could phone the vet but there wouldn't be an appointment till this evening and I'm hoping against hope that she doesn't last that long. She looks far too poorly to make any sort of recovery and she has definately laid down to die. The others have been nearby but not bothered her and when Mum gave her a little bowl of corn this morning they didn't try and grab it.

Well it was dragging on too long so I called the vet and they squeezed us in at the end of surgery.

I took her there in a rattan basket - no need for a box with a lid as she was too weak to move.

She is at peace now.
