My Grandad's Getting an Eglu! *update*

Recommended Posts

he is in his seventies - how cool is he?!

My husband and I were eating my nan's fab cheese and onion sandwiches last night when Grandad announced that he was getting 'one of them igloos' and three chickens and even showed me a book about keeping chickens that he had bought.

I am so proud to have such a cool grandad, he even said when they stop laying he will still like having the chickens around as he likes to see them pecking about and having fun :D

He has never had chickens before so we will enjoy swapping notes I bet

Bless him!

Fantastic, that's what I love about this place (omletsville) we don't know how old anyone is and everyone just gets along great. He's going to love it.

And believe me, two weeks into owning an eglu you need another person who isn't going to glaze over, other peoples politeness only lasts for so long

That's why we all come here :lol:

My father told me recently my grandad used to keep chickens. Unfortunately I never really knew him, he died when I was young.

Maybe chicken keeping is in the blood! Although I'm not sure if you can hand it on to your grandparents......

I'm the same as you....my grandad also kept chickens, but he died when I was one so I never knew him. I once asked dad if he named them all and he said "Hardly, he had 300!".....so I have a way to go yet!!

My MiL had always dreamed of keeping a few chickens, she is 84.

When we moved last year (she has an annex to the main house) we suggested that she get some as we have a large garden. :D This year she bought an eglu and 3 girls. She pays the bills, although we do contribute, and we do the cleaning, worming etc. Every afternoon, weather permitting she goes up the garden and lets her girls out to free range for around an hour. It encourages her to get out each day and she gets a huge amout of pleasure from her girls. It has been a HUGE success. The eggs are a bonus really we love them but they are not our main reason for keeping them.

I would agree that keeping chickens are a real interest/hobby for our senior family members as well as our youngest ones, both may need assistance though with cleaning etc.
