Snowy
Am I that brave do you think! [/color] Yep You might find that it doesn't look right with just the one wall, so you might have to keep going. That's what happened to me, but the whole lot done looks stunning and although it is darker it's a lovely colour whether spring, summer, autumn or winter. OH keeps telling me you lot are a bad influence! (he didn't like my aubergine wall in the hall and persuaded me to repaint it magnolia Not one of my better decisions - looks like a hospital corridor now ) Get my own back time! Joojoo
Definitely You CAN do this  You are not on your own. You've got all the help and support you could possibly need right here What do OH's know anyway?
Shirl
I wasn't that brave and just painted (well the decorator did ) the chimney breast red in the lounge and 1 or 2 walls in the dining room. We don't use the dining room often so I can't remember how many are red . That's quite bad isn't it?
Willow
Interesting that the site showed the best look was all walls red. I'd go for it the worst is a bit of wasted time and cost of the paint. I went for a terracotta in my living room and it's lovely and cosy.
Cinnamon
I went for a terracotta in my living room and it's lovely and cosy. THATS the shade I was trying to remember - terracotta! That is what my living room is painted in,although it doesn't look it in the photo
The Brown Clan
I tried it in my front room but it was too imposing (don't get enough light in ) , but I love red , why not go for a neutral colour and accesorise the room with red cushions curtains , Vases etc........... that will brighten it up
missuscluck
No harm in giving it a go then Snowy and see what you think. Is the contrast between the white sofas and red wall going to be too much. Perhaps you need something else added to bridge the gap between the two colours either with what goes on the other walls or some accessorising like large cushions for the sofa. dancing cloud
Go for it! The worst that can happen is you have to paint over it if you really hate it and chances are you'll create something fabulous you'll wish you'd done years ago I decided to paint a feature wall in my bedroom this summer and I really like it . It meant that I could use a much darker colour (in this instance Laura Ashley duckegg) on one wall, that I would not have been able to use all over (north-facing room). It gives the room just a bit of character without being overpowering. Entirely agree about putting testers on paper (did that myself), especially with red where shades are so different. Unless you have a very steady hand, or very straight walls, I'd suggest using masking tape round the edges to get a straight line between colours and avoid wonky bits. Let us know what you decide and how you get on - and we will want the piccies as usual please
Snowy
Thanks for your advice! Missuscluck - the white sofas are going to be replaced with conker brown sofas, hence the need to redecorate! The wall is now covered in several large, red blocks. It does look nice! I'm also thinking about new curtains - if finances allow!
Mutrix Farmers
Snowy - the Dulux website has one of those virtual room tools where you can experiment with colour. It won't be an exact replica of your room, but you can fiddle with the colours of the furniture in the picture to get a rough idea. A friend of mine is an artist and has a natural flare with bold colours. She has one wall red in her living room and it looks stunning. I wish I had the courage to paint things in brighter bolder colours but I always opt for neutral or pale shades, but I do try to have brighter/bolder accents (cushions etc)

The red will look nice with your woden furninture and nice new sofas.
gracefruit
We have a rather narrow lounge. When we redecorated, we decided to paint all of the walls a nice, neutral colour and then have a 'feature' wall which was given a little splash of colour. We chose the wall with the fireplace because the fireplace broke up the stronger colour a bit.
Angels4
Go for the red. I would pick up various shade cards and tape them to the wall so you can see how they will react to various lighting. I think a nice red/brown (more red than brown) would be warm and inviting.

I forgot to say, the only downside with red was how many coats it needed to get an even coverage. Of course, if you're able to get the colour you want in one coat that won't be a problem, but we couldn't and had to do 4 coats

Oooh, might take you up on that Bertie! I have ordered the suite. It was a major bargain from Co-op in Wigston, less than half price plus a major discount off the 3 seater as it is marked on the back (the bit that goes up against the wall! ), Italian leather rather than chinese ( Not something I'd considered but good to know). Would love to see pics of your red wall! (or anyones!) Hm, wallpaper - hadn't considered that - thought it would be to expensive, but may not be if only on one wall. MedusA
One of my friends has painted her (huge) Victorian dining-room in Farrow-and-Ball 'Eating Room Red' and it's gorgeous. That is exactly the shade I would use if I had the courage.
Olly
it made me realise why people pay more for F-and-B paint, it's not just a name. It's completely matt so it just soaks up the light, quite different to most ordinary emulsions. I'd be too scared, but she is very brave with colour (and it's a huge room). She said it took a lot more coats than they realised, though which made it quite expensive!
Cate in NZ
I've never been brave enough personally to go for a strong colour like red on any of my walls, I tend to think about it, mutter and plan, then wimp out at the last minute and go for a "safe" pastel shade. But I've been looking at houses recently since we're hoping to buy a new home soon, and I've seen loads with lovely, bright, strong colours, including lots of examples of red....and they all look great So, I'd say go for it too, as has already been said worst case scenario is that you hate it and have to paint over it again.....worth the risk I'd say
MedusA
Maybe I'll be a cheapskate and just go for the chimney breast then, Olly!
the hopefulls
One of the web sites like homebase or even dulux ( i can't remember) lets you post a picture of your room, like you have done on here, then you can paint your walls on the computer to see what it looks like with your furniture. sorry i can't remember which web site though. abwsco
Snowy, I'm bumping this as I'm nosey and wanted to know what colour scheme you'd gone for in the end.
Snowy
Well the paint is bought, but OH had to change his shifts again, so we no longer have any child free days to decorate! Hopefully it will get done soon! We've got Homebase Moroccan Red for the one wall and Mushroom for the other three. I will post pics if it ever gets done
