Scotty
Yesterday as I was walking past the hen house, I heard this awful noise, at first I thought one of the cats had gone inside the pen and had cornered one of the hens, then i thought nope too much noise could it be a fox... but the others were happily pecking around outside and didn't seem to be bothered by the racket. I opened the roof to see poor Barbara laying on her back having a sort of Fit. I quickly snatched her up and cuddled her and stroked her head, but within moments she had died in my arms. It was so very sad... but I am thankful that she had 7 months with us and ended her life running around our garden eatting all the plants, snails and worms she could find rather than being confined to that awful battery hen life. I wanted to say thankyou to you all, for encouraging me and the family to home an ex battery hen, they really make wonderful company even though you are never guranteed how long they are going to be with you for!. The remaining five seem fine at the moment If anybody knows why this could of happened, we would be grateful to hear from you Thanks Liz

Plum
Sorry to hear about Barbara. I really think you are great having given her life and love away from a little cage. I do so admire you all for taking on these chickens with such problems and sad histories and giving them the bright light of a loving home. for you and all the others. Hugs for you. piptiddlepip
I wonder if the unnatural life they had been forced to live had had such a terrible effect on them that it has artifically shortened their lives? Who knows what damage being forced to live that way does? I'd like to shut a few battery farmers together in a small room and see how they like it. Lydia
So sorry to hear about Barbara. I do think the life they have in the cages can lead to a shortened life span and sometimes they just go, nothing you can do. At least she had some freedom though, you did a good thing.
