sundayatwindsor
I'm up for joining in. Am petrified as am sure will be rubbish, but with scary credity crunch and a habit of spend spend spend instead of save save save want to break my habit. Charlottechicken
Good luck Cathy Stay away from the magazines and you will be home and dry I'm sure I will be trying anything to save money in 2009, I haven't even got a brass farthing now Fortunately, I have got £19 on my Boots card, and £50 M&S vouchers from a good deal on car insurance, so at least I can hit the sales with a clear conscience (well, you can't waste freebies can you? Couperwife
Good luck Cathy Stay away from the magazines and you will be home and dry I'm sure I have had quite a splurge on magazines recently it wont do me any harm not buying a magazine everytime I go shopping I am actually thinking of getting a couple of subscriptions using my Tesco vouchers, you get 4 times the amount if you spend the vouchers as cash they are only worth the actual value what do you think? cathy x
Christian
Magazines are my downfall too Cathy But, I did receive a Country Living subscription for Christmas I am going to have to be very very careful over the next few months. Will have a look at the other thread and see what the 'rules' are.
Couperwife
the rules The Idea Behind It To go a bit further than just Reduce Reuse Recycle; to help prove you are able to resist the relentless tide of corporate advertising and promotions that are engineered to make you part with your money; to make you examine in close detail what you actually spend your disposable income on in the first place; to further support local shops, food producers and small businesses. What CAN I buy then? You can buy anything you like, provided it is second-hand. Better still, borrow it or find it somewhere like Freecycle or a skip! Are there any exceptions? There are ALWAYS exceptions. * Food and drink * Utility/work clothing * Medicines and other medical supplies - but not stuff like Botox treatments or Viagra unless prescribed by a doctor * Stuff for cleaning (but do try making your own) * School supplies for children * Certain essential services like vets, plumbers, mechanics etc * Things that are essential for your work * Renewing subscriptions (no new ones) * Giving money to charity * Emergency birthday presents??? Found this , cathy x
Tiggy
its my OH who needs to read this he says how we need to save money then spends £££s on DVDs & gagets - always says they were on special offer, and theres me thinking it was a girly thing
Mrs Webmuppet
I know the feeling, funny how one minute the OH is worrying about money then hey presto really needs a new bit of sailing kit or needs a new bit for his boat........and he's got enough stuff to open his own chandlers! Still I shall be using my usual thing of 'you can't have a new..... unless the old one is broken (and unrepairable), completely worn out (clothing/footwear) or in the case of LMW no longer fits'. The only exceptions will be new chicken ( Eglu or Cube) accomodation (as the old wooden one is not going to last the year out)......... It's quite liberating not to go clothes shopping.........unusally for a female I hate shopping. I hardly ever go into Ipswich now.
TAJ
I think we will have to be very clear about what constitutes a 'new chicken', surely my day old chicks are second hand - they were not brand new Tracy
Chook n Boo Mum
OK, here goes......... I am going to join you Cathy & Christian et al. I am fed up with having so much of the month left at the end of the money ! I may just have to pretty up the rules & laminate/frame them to go on the wall to keep reminding me though.......I am thinking that signing up for a subscription for my jewellery mag and one Smallholder/Home Farmer mag now would be a good idea, especially as I have difficulties in locating the Home Farmer anyway. I was given some money for Christmas & birthday, so that would be a long-lasting pressy wouldn't it, then it wouldn't get swallowed into the "general pot" too !! Why am I justifying it to you guys ?? May even try the "shrapnel pot" & save towards a Cube too.......and de-clutter my house......and get on top of the ironing....and.... oh dear sorry, wrong thread Isn't it strange Mrs WM, how our spending is excessive on extras, however the new gadget (camera or accessory in my DH's case!) is always an investment Good luck to us all!! Couperwife
Sha, what a good idea laminating the rules and pinning them up ill try that too (then I'll put a copy - everywhere i go ) its great people are joining me on this re: the magazines, subscribe now (its still 2008 ) and it will last you all year cathy x
Charlottechicken
I am actually thinking of getting a couple of subscriptions using my Tesco vouchers, you get 4 times the amount if you spend the vouchers as cash they are only worth the actual value what do you think? That's a good idea Cathy. At least you will get your fix of magazines without actually buying them, and you can concentrate on other areas of the buy nothing new. Of course, getting 4 times the value of the vouchers is more than justification for swapping some of them for subscriptions I will be having another go this year, and hope to last the whole year this time At least I can't have another extension now I am skint I may be in town tomorrow trying to swap my vouchers for sale goods though I am also trying to live on less than £4,000 in 2009 Should be interesting
Couperwife
wow claire £4000 for the whole year, I hope I can get somewhere near you on this. I havent subscribed to my magazines yet, im still thinking about it I may keep them and put them towards a weekend away later on in the year. hmmmm decisions, decisions well, it all starts today (i actualy started earlier this week, but hey ) Im also going to make my signature bigger, so I dont forget cathy x
Christian
Good for you Cathy, but don't worry, we won't let you forget So far it is day One and I haven't spent a thing. This is going to be easy

Couperwife
ok, day two (dont worry, Im not going to post every day ) and still no spending however, we are on route to my parents to swap pressies so fingers crossed I cant bail out this early - and I have told everyone its weird, some people tell me that they think its a great idea and some seem hell bent on stopping me from succeeding ive already had 3 offers of a days shopping at the metro centre, where we can "spend, spend, spend" (and with people that would at charity shops. it will just be easier to stay in ho hum cathy x
Falkor
[quote name= May even try the "shrapnel pot" & save towards a Cube too.......and de-clutter my house......and get on top of the ironing....and.... oh dear sorry' date=' wrong thread Good luck to us all!! Sha xx[/quote] I have counted my shrapnel pot (1p, 2p and 5p and have an impressive £46.00!! As per my singnature this it to go towards a cube so I can have MORE chickens!!! I have also had a mini clear out and sorted car boot and ebay stuff. A couple of my handbags are up to £30 on ebay already Good luck all!! Chook n Boo Mum
Ok, quick update - or should that be confession ?! I went into town yesterday with the family, to spend the children's WHSmiths vouchers, which having arrived yesterday were already burning holes in pockets! They could find nothing that really jumped out at them, however I did..... ! But I think I can justify it in a satisfactory way! I got about £60 for my Christmas & birthday presents, from Mum, Dad & Nan so have spent that on Home Farmer Subscription (the man rang me to clarify my name & address & he seems a total poppet ) for £33, a book called Lost Crafts by Una McGovern for £12.50 not £25, and the Grow & Cook your own Veg books by Carol Klein for £5 each, down from £16.99 each - also a better deal than a set for £12.50!!! £55.50 spent on behalf of other people on presents which I will use forever rather than the tatt which my sis got me, but that's another story...and it's the thought that counts...am trying to think nice thoughts about people as another challenge for the New Year !! The money also didn't get swallowed up in the general grocery pot, although it could have gone in the Cube one...too late now! I am now going to hole up at home until I absolutely HAVE to go out, so I don't get tempted again - I do find it helps though to go out with no cards & only a few pounds in my pocket, so I have nothing to back up any temptation....... I know I won't save anything this month, as I will be catching up with myself & DD's club payments all need paying in the next week or so, however I hope next month will be a better one. Hope everyone else is doing well..... Will spend some of today on the de-cluttering with small children ....ho hum, they'll be impressed !!! Christian
Day 4 in the non spending house..... I still haven't spent a thing. Haven't been out in fairness, so not been tempted. Tiggy
today is the first time I've had to buy anything since christmas, I've written all my seed labels (wooden lolly sticks)and needed some potting compost just a small bag but it was frozen solid and really heavy, my free workout for the day Oh and had to pay the first credit card bill of the year - not too upset though, I moved my overdraft and high cost card onto virgin money and got 0% for 16 months so should save me a few £s
Couperwife
I am just back from my parents and have had a lovely time I spent I bought a fab pair of jeans from miss Sixty (they were £3.99 from the charity shop) and a lovely tweed jacket for £5.99 (from the same charity shop ) my mum gave me (on top of my christmas presents ) an indigo moon jacket, a black handbag, and 7 new unused lip glosses, a black teeshirt and a lovely scarf mum persuaded my to buy the jeans and the jacket, slightly too small, but an unmissable purchase. I am very happy with myself well done to all others cathy x
