Sad day.... Henny Penny

Recommended Posts

Today is a very sad day.

Henny Penny died this morning, she was one of our original Omlet girls. She had not laid for a few months but most of the time did the normal chicken things and was the friendliest of our girls always happy to be picked up and stroked.

This morning she did not rush out of the eglu with the others, she stayed inside, I gave her a stroke and she seemed a bit off colour.

I went out to check on her after a while as I could not see her in the run with the others and she was laying on the bars. DD and I brought her into the house and put her in a box with some bedding, she was very floppy, sadly she died an hour or so later after a few strokes.

We will miss her very much, she taught us so much about chucks.

So sorry for you. At least it doesn't sound llike she suffered.

Was she very old?

Sending hugs your way

:(

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Henny Penny was not very old, she was an Omlet girl so I think about 16 weeks when we got her and we enjoyed her company for eleven months, so I guess she was about fifteen months old. We are trying to look on the positive, she was loved and spoilt by us, compared to the life of some chickens such as those rescued yesterday she had a great if rather short life.

But we will miss her helping to do the gardening :D wherever you were she was never far away.

Hi Chrissie

So so sad to hear about Henny Penny. I know exactly how you're feeling, having gone through the same with Clarissa, only after a few weeks of having her.

You get attached ever so quickly and it's not nice when they go for apparently no reason at all. One day they're fine and the next, they're not.

Give your other chook lots of affection and get on the phone and order another one!

Better still, check out the rescue centres that are rehoming chooks that need a nice warm home.

I got mine from Little Hen Rescue.

xx

Thanks for all your kind thoughts, it is nice to know that you all understand.

When I tucked them into bed tonight, the eglu looked so empty the three of them had all cuddled up together in the corner near the nestbox.

On a more positive note, Ivory laid an egg this afternoon the first for almost two months, she has been moulting and now has a new set of feathers. :)
