Chookiehen
Mine doesn't expire till 2016, but I believe that if you were one of the people who got a photo license the year they were first issued, yours will have already expired. Tessa the Duchess
I presume you have to pay to renew these I have an old paper licence, goodness knows where it is, I got it in 1963 it expires in 2016, they didn't try and rip motorists off in the olden days. susanbb
Mine's a paper one. I'd better go off and check
Chookiehen
Paper ones should be ok - the photos licenses have an expiry date so that, like passports, they have an up to date photo on them. If you do still have a paper one, just be sure to not move, get married or divorced...
Blackrocksrock
Mine is also a paper one - expires 2024! I prefer the old fashioned ones - everything else is a card nowadays
TAJ
I only found out about this a few weeks ago - apparently a number of people have been caught out - the paper part gives the full date, as per the original paper license, but the photo card part has a lot shorter date. abwsco
Perhaps I'm obsessive with things like this but the expiry date is on the licence when you get it. Do people not look at things properly

Guest
I have a paper one and am stubbournly going to keep it! I don't see why I should pay for one - especially as they are a bit like Identity cards via the back door if you ask me! I had a bit of an argument with the library last time I needed to renew my library card - they asked for ID - so I produced my driving license - to which the reply was " we can't accept this - it's invalid" ...... I put them right on that one and stood my ground - I think the young girl thought I was out of the ark to have such an old fashioned license! Lesley
Perhaps I'm obsessive with things like this but the expiry date is on the licence when you get it. Do people not look at things properly Not if you've held a licence for a long time and are not used to being ripped off! I passed my test in 1972 We've only just changed our licences after moving nearly 3 years ago - and we hadn't noticed The old ones didn't expire until you were 70, or was it 65? It's £ 17.50 to renew
Geoid
so I produced my driving license - to which the reply was " we can't accept this - it's invalid" ...... I put them right on that one and stood my ground Louise She was right, it is invalid as a form of ID, ID must have a photo. Its the law
TAJ
Perhaps I'm obsessive with things like this but the expiry date is on the licence when you get it. Do people not look at things properly Like others I had an old paper license that expires when I am 70 - I got it when I was 17, so it 'lasts' for 53 yrs without renewal, but when we moved house I had to change my address details and got a photo license as there was no choice. As you know the photo license comes in 2 parts the paper bit and the photocard. The paper bit is still dated until I am 70 years old, however the photocard bit is only dated for 10 years. So I knew the expiry date of my license, but I was not expecting to have two expiry dates that are different on the two parts of my license. I think younger folk do not have the same issue as I understand newer licenses are not until 70 yrs old? Tracy
chocchick
I was in the first year of the new driving licenses around 10 years ago so had to renew last year I think they don't believe I still look like I'm 18 Wasn't particularly impressed when I saw the cost but when I was 17/18 I was excited as could prove I really was 17/18 and all grown up as me and my friend looked younger

chocchick
When I picked up my PhD gown the gown man gave me a funny look and said I didn't look old enough and looked about 18 Still I have better hair than in the last photo
The Dogmother
I traded up from a tatty old paper one to a nice new photo licence when I got divorced; I used the change of title (I kept my married name). I much prefer it and it's useful as ID too.
Aunty e
Mine has been extremely handy as a form of ID (apparently in the Co-op I do still look under 21 despite being a couple of months away from my thirties, hurray!!!!!!!) and before my hubby's got nicked, he would use it as ID on internal flights. Very handy.
The Dogmother
I'm 46 and got asked for ID the other day I wasn't sure whether to be flattered or gobsmacked!
Chickvic
I too have the paper one and it is valid until 2044. I don't like the idea of paying every 10 years to renew. Although last year in August, DH and I hired a minibus to go on hloiday with family. They were shocked at the paper licences and even more at the fact neither of us have any points I've been driving for 14 years and DH for 17 years. Still we got the minibus and had a fab holiday

Tina C
OH and I have same start dates on ours but mine expires June next year....and his expires October next year.... Can anyone explain that? OH says that he has heard if you don't renew on time you have to take your test again Surely not?
chooklady
It's the same as a passport, after 10 years your appearance is going to be different. Your first provisional licence is £50, there isn't anything else to pay when you pass your test. To replace a lost or stolen licence you have to pay £17.50 and the same fee applies to changing from a paper licence to a photocard or updating your photocard, you are paying to have the photo changed your licence to drive is still valid until your 70th Birthday, that hasn't changed. Hope this has helped. Nicola
