What have you picked today?

Recommended Posts

Just been bean picking for the best part of an hour! A couple of days of rain and they all went bonkers. By far the best is Lazy Housewife and virtually filled the trug. Next comes the purple ones (Blue Coco - I didn't have many plants survive to be planted, but if I had I would have been inundated with the pods!) and then the Ice/crystal wax - they look like little icicles so quite easy to spot. This year they have grown potty and want to climb so I have been trying to hunt under masses of leaves and stems to find them! I will have to chop some more calabrese as some have started to flower and I can't pick them quick enough. The runners are disappointing and I think some of my saved seed has crossed with Hestia - which is dwarf and the pods are much shorter. New lot and a new site next year. Mind you, loads of blackfly - no use squirting with the magic garlic mix - the rain just washes it away and the aphids all go "phew"!

Don't talk to me about courgettes  Every meal has grated courgette in it at the moment. Courgette omelette, grated into pasta sauces, even in our sausage rissoles for tea. YD doen't like them unless they are grated and disguised. We also eat them fried roasted etc. I am having a go at a chocolate courgette cake tomorrow

...in paper feed sacks, in a cool shed.

We dug up all the 'freebies' today - the potatoes which we had inadvertently left in the ground last year. We picked enough to really fill a builders wheelbarrow!

They were.....erm...... new potatoes.....some the size of a small football! and mos tthe size of my fist! We have 2 sacks full and a bucket of the ones we speared with the fork

Apart from that we've picked all sorts of vegetables......you name it, we've picked it.....apart from parsnips which didn't grow at all

I'm not complaining about my courgettes! I love them!

This week I picked about a pound and a half.

My broad beans are very sad this year though :(

This is my second year growing them. They were so easy last year!

I think I have planted them too densely this year.

I'm going to water them and pay them and bit more attention and see if that makes a difference.

To store potatoes let them dry off, and then store in a thick paper bag.

The bags that chicken feed comes in for example!

My local Chinese restaurant grows courgettes, pak choi and other chinese greens. They have yellow courgettes this year. Cool!

OH emptied his bag of maincrop spuds today. It contained 2 huge ones and a big ants nest. He wasn't impressed with his crop, but I said at least it was more than he started with. The girls were delighted with the ants - they had to keep going back because of the nipping. I could tell when they were back in the compost - lots of squeaks when the ants were biting.

Other than that, loads of beans and another beetroot.
