Old Speckled Hen
Polish parents. Been picking mushrooms since I could walk In Italy and France the local pharmacists are trained in identification so if you pick fungi you can take them there to make sure they are OK Pity there is not a similar set up here because the British Isles are hoachin" in edible fungi
The Dogmother
Yes, it's much more common in Italy (or used to be at any rate) my Nonna was a bit of an expert but I'd not like to take the risk myself.
beach chick
Silly question did you cook it for them (the marrow) and can I give them beetroot leaves? no, just cut it up a bit because it was huge - looked like Popeye's forearm dont know about beetroot leaves, but cant think why not... re the mushrooms - take care! the guy that wrote the Horse Whisperer has just had a kidney transplant from his daughter, after he cooked mushrooms he'd picked. his wife and bil and sil are all still on dialysis... bluekarin
........ and can I give them beetroot leaves? I give mine beetroot leaves and they love them Yesterday I picked a large courgette with aspirations to become a marrow, a few green beans and a broadbean pod. One of hubbys customers gave us a huge marrow like courgette, which I will turn into spicy chutney along with a marrow I've been given Thinking about digging up some spuds. They look really pathetic and didn't flower, so I think we might not have many this year. The toms are growing nicely and am rather looking forward to eating them. I hope they start to turn red before autumn well and truly kicks in

Forestchook
About 48lbs of Damsons! (last week) Gave away lots but still have made approaching 40 jars of jam! Needless to say this has not helped our jam backlog. I guess everyone gets jam for Christmas this year. I don't know how many pears, the branches are breaking off the trees. We also still have the apples to look forward to! Oh, Have picked a couple of lbs of runner beans too N
jbiggs
I prepared some nut and garlic pesto today and I am glad to have used some ingredients I picked from my own growing. Though they were not as ripe as I would have wanted them, I used the onions I have been hanging on the basement for quite a while already. I also got some fresh basil leaves from my own pots and some tomato tots. It actually is a good "harvest" as they all contributed to making a great meal. ali-s
charlotte will store till about christmas being a 2nd early That is good to know. It is the first time we have grown enough Potatoes to put some in store. I dried them off overnight on the staging in the greenhouse. Today I carefully brushed off the dried earth and put them in jute sacks. They are in my little potting shed with the window blacked out. Have I prepared them correctly ? Today I picked a few Runner Beans. They have sooo slow this year. At this rate the first frosts will arrive before the beans are ready to pick.
