Increasing the flock - how to convince the other half?!!

Recommended Posts

A question to those of you who started out small with just a couple of chooks and an eglu and now have WIR's and an entire flock - how did you go about convincing your hubbies / wives / other halves that more chickens = more fun? :)

I am desperate to get more chickens as I'm completely smitten but I keep coming up against a stern 'NO' from my fiance whenever I raise the subject  I have even considered smuggling them in and then denying all knowledge.

Any tips and stories of persuasion / bribery that have worked for you would be much appreciated!!

I am ashamed to say that i got my OH drunk and then got him to agree with witnesses present!!!

So i went from three chooks and an eglu to Cube and WIR with promise of 4 new chooks!!

I still have three chooks left in my quota!!!! Oh what to get

i haven't given my oh any options, we were getting an eglu with 2 chooks, the eglu is arriving in a couple of weeks and we're picking up 4 chooks and oh and my dad are building me a huge run :D my dad is making enough room for another eglu so i can get more chooks when i want :D

i wanted a cream legbar but they don't seem to sell any pol's only chicks, which i don't feel ready for as i've never had chooks before :(

My OH is hugely tolerant, we started with three chickens and an Eglu and now have 13 chickens, two eglus, a walk in run, a cage in the kitchen and 7 eggs in an incubator

He makes gentle protests but knows better than to try too hard now  in saying that I am quite responsible and would take notice if he really was against the idea and I think he appreciates that - mutual respect and all that..... :D

The fact that I look after then chickens myself, take care of all of the costs and that we have a garden big enough to cope really helps, if the chickens aren't going to totally take over (eg a small garden) I think you have more of a chance of persuading your OH :D

Failing that try the drunk with witnesses approach that Palmer07 took

I started out with (green eglu) and GNRGNR but after reading the forum I came to the conclusion that I needed at least 3 girls so I have used the 'its all my fault, I feel terrible, I've been so selfish - thinking only of how many eggs I could use and not about what's best for the girls' argument. My OH immediately agreed that we must bring our flock up to 3 and I'm still planning my trip to get additional girl(s!). I know some places will only sell a minimum of 2 so I could be 'forced' to have a 4th girl - how terrible would that be!!?

Well, as you have two chickens now, how about saying the other one gets lonely when one of them's laying-this was definitely true after we lost Henrietta and the bluebelles were a pain when they were left on their own.

And of course you'd have to get two, as they're then easier to introduce!

My DH is as crazy about the girls as I am so no problems when I said I needed an orpington to cuddle and a !eggblue! layer. A couple of weeks later and hey presto, we got a very cuddly Buff orp, a gorgeous !eggblue! she is a shetland and has been claimed by DH as his and a columbian, just because we liked the colour of her feahters

So I would say the trick is to get your oh to fall in love with your girls and then convince him that he wants more :lol:

I ordered some more chickens, and then cancelled the order when OH and myself agreed that it wasn't the right time for more. The email didn't go through though to cancel them, and "Ooops, word censored!"ody on this forum believes me :boohoo::boohoo: , so I had 4 hens delivered to my house as a suprise which I knew nothing about  .

So trust to the winds of fate, and more chickens will come to you if you want them enough :D .

Took me 2 years to convince my OH to get Chickens. He eventually gave in around a friends house. She said that they wanted to get chickens, my OH laughed and said if my friends OH agreed to chooks then so would he. But my friends OH had already agreed... Hooray! I took that as a green light and the next day ordered my eglu!

He now regularly refers to them as "his" chickens, and spoils them rotten with treats. He even goes digging in the garden to find them worms.... And he is garden phobic...

The first thing my mum said when told her getting chickens, was "you needn't think that we will look after them when you go away". Guess where they are going for 2 weeks when we go away? Yes, Eglu, run and chickens are all going to my parents house... An avid gardener, she is already "saving" dandelions and the like for them, as are her friends...

I must admit that it never occurs to me to even mention it. :D He is aware that we have a few hens. That is as far as his interest in the matter goes. :D :D
