Alli - diet pills

Just wondered if anyone has tried these at all? been thinking about it for ages and just bit the bullet and order some..BUT after pressing the button thought how daft I was not asking for forum feedback first :roll:

 

So although mine now on the way I would love to hear anything good and bad as know there must be bad bits :?

DON'T TAKE THEM!!!!!!! End of.

 

They have an active ingredient in them that can bring on heart attacks in some people. There has been controversy in America over them, and I lost my Dad to taking a similar tablets aged 47, 8 years ago.

 

My Dad was healthy and slim (taking tablets was to lose a few extra pounds after finding a new girlfriend after my Mum had died) and died very suddenly of a heart attack. He'd been given a full bill of health only weeks before, the only thing they could attribute it to was the tablets.

 

He got the tablets on the internet.

 

Sorry, I know you want encouraging stories, but I couldn't not share this awful one :(

I have not had personal experience as I was scared off by a friend who had taken them.

 

Sorry, but it is not good/nice news.

 

She says you constantly stink - body odour, not sure if it is sweat or what.

Also, you keep messing yourself - number 2's. She had to change her bed sheets every day and had to take changes of clothes to work with her! :vom:

 

That was enought to put me off...

 

I have been taking Green Tea Extract 315mg from Holland and Barratt. It certainly has made me feel less bloated. It is an anti-dioxidant and I dont normally get to the loo every day and can get really bagged up, but this lets me go every morning and makes me feel heaps better. Also, the tops of my thighs dont bulge as much.

 

Sorry to be the prophit of doom, but you did say good or bad...

Oooh Debs, just read your posting after I had typed mine - how awful! How sad. The things we do to make ourselves look "better"

Re the soiling yourself - alli acts by preventing your body absorbing fat, therefore the fat you eat is expelled in the faeces. That is the effect on your gut - it moves through your system quicker, a bit like taking castor oil! :? But that is only if you eat a higher fat diet. Cut down the fat you eat and there is less to expel. Worth googling it to read about the experiences of others.

You are NOT fat Eggy, don't do it! There I have spoken! :wink: You have a heck of a long way to go before you get like me and I'm sure you will never do that anyway. You are fit and you exercise - you ride your horse etc. Why not have a walk to your mum's - nice quick march if you are so worried about yourself. Or go swimming - a body has a tendancy to get stuck in a happy where it is mode, so a change of exercise once in a while keeps it on it's toes. I'm good at telling other people what to do - can't follow my advice myself though! :oops::D And if you are still worried, check with the Docs and have a chat with the nutritionist (if that's their title). A friend of mine had tablets via her docs (and she is twice the size of me!!!) but she always felt so drained because the food just goes straight through.

Pleeeeaasseee be careful.

Snowy is absolutely correct in what she says.

 

I took the 'real' ones, prescribed by my GP and must admit I had no problems whatsoever by eating a low fat diet.

 

I had already lost quite a bit of weight but got 'stuck'. For me, they worked extremely well,

I did not smell nasty and I was not incontinent!

 

So sorry about your Dad Debs, but I had to air my opinion as I have had personal experience of this.

 

The only thing I would suggest is that you check with your GP first to make sure that he/she can confirm there would be no contra-indications for you personally. As I said mine was monitored by my GP with a monthly check and when she decided I had had enough, she didn't prescribe any more.

I'm with the above!

 

I have been on the ones prescribed by the doctor for 3 years now and have lost 4 stone.

 

Yes you have to be careful if you think you have wind (make sure you go to the loo) but thats all.

 

You have to change your eating habits, smaller portions and healthier meals but it does work.

 

The one thing that it does work on is KFC, go for a meal and take a pill, you will see what i mean!

I am VERY black and white about losing weight - and no, I am in no way perfect!

 

But your size is the direct result of calories you eat and calories you burn off in your day to day life.

 

Increase your exercise / reduce the calories you eat and the weight comes down. I lost 2 stone this way. Hard work, but worth it. Weight Watchers worked for me - having someone else weigh me each week made me want to succeed!! I liked WW, as I could still eat - I couldn't deal with having shakes etc instead of food!!

 

If you exercise already, then as someone else mentioned, change your exercise, or add to it. Start running on these nice mornings, or find a local exercise class.

 

Changing your lifestyle/eating habits is the only way to lose weight and keep the weight off long term. Learn where calories "hide" - supermarket salads in particular are terrible, you would be better off with a big mac!

 

I know "easy fixes" are are very tempting, but if it's too good to be true, it probably is!!

 

The only time (I believe) that things like drugs are the answer for weight issues, is if there is an underlying problem or other health issues.

Debs so sorry about your Father thats really sad and must haev been very tramatic for you.. thanks for making me aware.

 

Koojie I will be careful honest! I have been walking, cycling in addition to all the horse stuff and just cannot shift the weight...apart from losing about half a stone this month but thats from living on salad and smoothies. And still have about 4 stone to shift!

 

I'm a vege so eat pretty well anyway but sit at a desk 9 hours a day wich causes the problem and just found out i have 'celliac disease ? (sp) so I won't be having many fatty/starchy foods anyway.

 

I'm honestly not looking for a 'quick fix' as been fighting the flab for 4 yearsw now.. just wanted to 'boost' the work I am doing.

 

I guess its a question of trying very carefully as there does seem to be some positive experience so pleased to hear this. If I have a bad time I'll stop but think I still need to try..

Hmmm, well I am on the fence on this one.

 

Being overweight myself & having been offered Allis bigger sister on the NHS & deciding that it was not for me, because I have digestive troubles, I would say to think carefully if you are a Celliac/Coeliac (*sp)

 

But I know how hard natural wieght loss can be,& how wearing it is.

 

Personally if you can take it & your Doctor says its Ok for you,then you may as well give it a go.

At least with Alli you have to learn a new way of eating,reducing & cutting out fats that can cause the horrid side effects, rather than doing something more extreme like cutting out food altogether & living on diet shakes.

 

Personally I don't think its for anyone to judge or to tell you something is wrong - make your own decision,along with advice from your GP.

Well, you don't look like you have 4 stone - you hide it well!! :D If you have been exercising so much, perhaps it is down to muscle weight. Try cutting out an exercise for a fortnight and then start again - I was down the gym and swimming every other day. I ended up swimming over a mile each time and really pushing myself with rowing, cycling, step machines, running machines (I used to run a fair bit on those blasted things) and that funny ski/stepping machine (which was my favourite). Not one bit of weight did I shift and I felt it was a complete waste of time and money - except for swimming which is my thing anyway (but hated racing, I can swim all day long if my skin didn't go all wrinkly). So you have to trick your body - mind over matter! :lol:

Ooh I forgot to add my dad was a coeliac too, Waitrose did his favourite bread - although he much preferred fluffy wheaty things. Once you start with the gluten free stuff, you will probably see a difference.

Muscle is heavier than fat, which is why I cannot stand those BMI charts and the like

 

Have no experience with diet pills, and cannot say whether you should or should not use them, but PLEASE be careful with pills bought over the internet

Hairdresser's daughter tried Alli and absolutely hated it. She said the side affects were awful and you could be "caught short" with going to the toilet if you get what I mean. :anxious: I am overweight but would not touch these with a barge pole.

 

I used Slimfast as a "kickstart" to weightloss and lost 21lbs in 5 weeks eating healthy meals for dinner. I also bought a elliptical trainer & some weights and have turned my spare room into a gym. Maybe make an appointment and discuss things with your doctor....I see a motivational/lifestyle coach every 6 weeks who takes my weights & measurements and talks about my diet and this was all organised through my local doctors surgery. :)

Hi, How long have you been diagnosed as Coeliac? You may well find that now you know what has been causing the problem just by cutting out the foods that you are allergic too...ie Gluten the weight will just drop off....I am veggie too, and one of the problems is getting enough good fats in your diet....not generally eating too many .Also if your weight loss is plateauing ( sorry don't think that's really a word but you know what I mean) are you eating enough?... If you aren't taking in sufficient calories your body will just go into famine mode and conserve all that lovely fat!...

 

Sorry no experience of taking pills for weight loss but I just don't see how they work in the long term, and in the meantime the pharmaceutical company is making themselves very rich by preying on people's insecurities...again..(steps down off soapbox).

Tried slimfast.. was nice but was hard to use long term although still use for lunch as suits my lifestyle :D

 

I have very big concerns about the side effects but thought this only happens if you eat the fatty foods you are supposed to avoid??

I do see your point but thought they would be worth a try ... I've only been diagnoised in last couple of weeks so will see what happens once diet adjusted before I actually try these as agree it may help once wheat etc out of system.

I don't know much about these tablets but wanted to say that WW is fab. I lost 75lbs on WW in 2005 and I have kept all apart from about 7lbs of it off. I totally recommend running as a great way of keeping weight off too. I had never ran in my life before (well accept from when I tried on the treadmill and fell off the back, but we shall let that one slide :whistle: ) and in 2006 I went from non runner to half marathon runner! At the end of 2006 I was running 11 miles from my house to my Mums for Sunday lunch.

 

I have a point here, somewhere lol, is that WW and exercise is fab. :D

I am also on xenical from the doctor (alli but double the dose) and have had no problems at all. I have had oil come thru the other end but only as I'm on the toilet anyway. If you follow good low fat diet then u should be fine. I take them to stop me reaching for snacks and getting takeaway every night as I know I would pay if I did.

 

I still agree best way to lose weight is fewer calories and plenty of exercise but I don't have that willpower at the moment so xenical it is!

Alli are designed to help stop any fat you do eat (& you do eat some & NEED to eat some) from being absorbed into your body.

They increase weight loss by half again, so for every 2lb you lose, they will help you lose another 1lb.

 

However, if you eat something very fatty, then it will fly straight out the other end, something that is know charmingly as 'seepage' :anxious:
