Fizzle Knit Posted July 3, 2009 Share Posted July 3, 2009 Didn't want to take over on Raina's post, but was interested to hear how close swine flu is getting to people on this forum? My elder son's secondary school confirmed it has a number of cases this week, and someone who works on the same floor/area as my husband also had it confirmed this week. Both those orgs have gone public with it, but I get the impression a lot of others, schools included, are keeping quiet. A friend in London for example found out that her son's sec school has 8 confirmed cases, but they hadn't announced it, she found out by chance. Does anyone know the incubation periods? Yolky Posted July 3, 2009 Share Posted July 3, 2009 A school close to me was one of the first to get it, Downend school, and they did close at the time. I think that the gov aren't going to do any more closings from now though. I am a govorner at another school and we are waiting for official policy to be passed on to us ready for after the holidays when it is likely to have picked right up. I have to say I am starting to get a little worried about it. I have three children all at different schools and my youngest is starting in infants in September. I have asthma too. I have been being *really* good with my meds and making sure I do my preventors on a regular basis as I was a bit guilty of forgetting some mornings/bedtimes. I guess there is nothing we can do about it really, just hope for the best. I have heard about some people having in stocks of food, dried stuff and UHT milk, things like that, so if they did get it they didn't have to go out. My OH heard a report late one night about people who take H2 inhibitors to control excess stomach acid. The report said that because your stomach acid is a first line defence against viruses etc these people are more at risk from illnesses like pneumonia. I have taken these for a couple of years now and I am on the higher dosage as are both my parents. It has changed my life but once you are taking them it is very difficult to stop because you get a redoubling of the acid production. I am a bit worried how this will affect me if i get flu. I have a pretty strong immune system normally so hopefully I will be ok. Hope that your asthma is ok and take care of yourself Raina. We have not been told officially, I only found out by accident. It is a big office building with over 500 staff in varying Government departments so you think they would do something, but no I think there's a fair few schools closed in Birmingham, and one death too. If you are going to catch it you will wether or not you are taking H2, its true that your stomach acid helps a little but your immune system does most of the work anyway, please dont stop your meds Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

quinlan Posted July 4, 2009 Share Posted July 4, 2009 My step daughters school, has had confirmed cases and yesterday after a letter was sent home from my sons school we got a text saying two children had since been prescribed with Tamiflu, but they are said to be fine!!!?? Chickvic Posted July 4, 2009 Share Posted July 4, 2009 I was presenting with said symptoms last week, I phoned the Doc's and they cancelled my appointment, told me to take painkillers, lots of liquids and keep myself isolated. Looking back I think my DH had it the week before, same symptoms etc. I work in a school (I was off with vertigo anyway) and they didn't want to swab at all. It is mild in most people just causes problems in those that are weakened in some way ie. the very old and they very young. I felt rough for about 5 days and then it went, I wasn't offered any drugs whatsoever and it is here where most cases have been found. Tiggy Posted July 6, 2009 Share Posted July 6, 2009 the advice changes daily, now the health protection agency are happy that swine flu is a mild version and they seem to have mapped what it will do it is being treated as normal seasonal flu, so no swabbing & now only people with underlying conditions are being treated with anti virals, each area has a special arrangement for babies under a year in the beginning it was a brand new virus so no one knew how things would go - so we had all the media frenzie & the agency going into alert mode Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cyber Chook Posted July 6, 2009 Share Posted July 6, 2009 Just saw your thread, having just posted this myself: We were due to go to Australia to celebrate my husband's parents' Golden Wedding anniversary, when my younger daughter went down with swine flu the day before. So we're still here! And eldest daughter trod (bare-footed) on a bee the same day and had a reaction to the sting, plus Molly the cat went lame. Is fate trying to tell us something?! At least she didn't develop the swine flu on the plane - otherwise, we'd now be spending two weeks in quarantine in Singapore, along with the rest of the passengers on the plane! Here in North London loads of people we know have had or are having it - it sounds like most of her school year has it (she's 16, and luckily they'd finished their GCSE's). Our GP said they're all going down with it at the surgery. We know about 20 people who've had it. If it comes your way, my experience has been with us and with friends, that it isn't any worse or different from ordinary flu, to be honest. My GP said that she knows of people who are holding flu parties, to get it over and done with. (I should add this isn't recommended on the nhs swine flu website). Caroline P.S. We were advised to stay away from work for a week. Re: catching it, incubation seems to be usually between 2 to 5 days from the first onset of symptoms in the initial sufferer, but it can be anything up to 7 days. Steph101 Posted July 7, 2009 Share Posted July 7, 2009 My nephew has got it. He's 24 and works as a retail shop manager in the Bull Ring Birmingham. He's caught it at work, as six others on the shop floor are off with it. The doctor told him there is nothing they can do now, he just has to stay and home and sit it out.
