Got ES's results. They are terrible. He failed English and Physics. He got one B and 2 Cs in the others which is something I suppose.

 

He can't even get a job without English Higher. OH said he wouldn't even consider him for an admin job in his company.

 

I'm devastated - he's a really bright boy but seems to have no motivation. He doesn't even seem to care much about the results and only got upset when we hugged him.

it may be the kick he needs, knowing that even OH wont give him a job, may inspire him to go back and re-sit (he may have been "assuming" that he had a "job in the bag - regardless )

Sorry to hear about your son's exam results. What year is he in? If he has another year to go he can always take them again next year or do a college course. What does he want to do job wise? While I do feel that English is a really important subject, it is not a necessary requirement for all jobs/university courses.

What does ES like doing? The fact that he got upset when you hugged him says a lot to me. He is obviously disappointed with his results and he's upset because he feels he's let you and DH down which he will be feeling terrible about. Perhaps he needs to be looking at other occupations. Carpentry? Plumbing? Spark? Did he study Business Studies at school? What did he want to be when he was younger? Sorry about all the questions, I'm just trying to get a picture of your boy and his interests. I'll stop now

As Couperwife said well done to your son on the ones he passed. Does he have an opportunity to resit the exams he failed? My ES did badly in his maths GCSE and had to resit it when he went to 6th form - he wouldn't be able to stay there if he failed it again. I must admit he said to me that he didn't work hard when he resat it but he did get it up to a C which was better than nothing.

 

Does he have any idea what he wants to do with his life? If they have no idea what they want to do I think it makes them less focused on getting their exams.

Oh, poor you! I did badly in my highers too, (this was 20 years ago now). I was 16 when I sat them, and took subjects I wasn't interested in - I also discovered boys at the same time! It shook me up, and the next year I took subjects I actually liked, and got five A grades. So maybe once the dust has settled your son will mange to sort himself out.

 

If not, then I guess that there's no point in him continuing school if he isn't going to be motivated. What does he want to do?

My elder son mucked about at school, and even though I sat with him through many boring hours of revision for his GCSE's he did really badly and it was obvious he wasn't going to go on to higher education:( He left school and drifted in and out of a few rubbish jobs and periods of unemployment and then got a job as an assistant to a landscape gardener, he absolutely loved it and has been doing it for 4 years now. He works for an industrial landscape gardening co. and has his ticket for driving diggers and dumpers. He says he loves working outside and the thought of being inside surrounded by paperwork makes him feel Your son sounds like a lovely boy and maybe he is just not academically minded and would rather work in a trade or with his hands. Good luck to him.

Sorry to hear about ES results as I recall he did very well last year or did I dream that? We too are awaiting AS results with trepidation after an amazing high last year with the GCSEs. YS has been very diffficult this year( I may post about this somewhere when I feel ready to talk about it) and I understand some of what you have been through. I am trying to be pragmatic and you need to be as well.

When they want it they will do it. It seems that no matter how we try to help they have to make their own mistakes -very often the same ones we made!

Be strong and positive for him - you are very good at that. It is certainly not the end of the world just a small setback for now that requires a bit of a rethink.

I would send a smiley hug if I knew how so here's a lettery one instead.

Sorry about the higher results - he needs to speak to a careers adviser and there should be some available after the results are out and he can go back for 6th year and resit his higher english if I remember rightly - I did used to work for careers a while ago!.

He will come to his senses I am sure when he realises english is universal for any job.

Thanks, everyone . I feel a bit better now as we've had a long face to face chat with his head of year, guidance teacher and his graphics teacher (good on the school that you can do that so soon after the results coming out ).

 

All is not lost. He will get an automatic appeal for English as he was expected to get a B. They will also appeal for Graphics (he got a C) as he should have got a B there too. Not much hope of that appeal but worth a try.

 

He will need to start the resit English course as we won't find out about the appeal till October.

 

They suggest resitting Higher Physics (easier than picking a new subject) and dropping an Advanced Higher as they don't count for as much as a Higher in the UCAS application.

 

So all being well he'll do one AH and 3 Highers next year so could end up with 6 Highers and one AH which will be ample for uni.

 

Whew . OH still to be convinced but I feel a lot better. ES will still have to pull his finger out though - it's not going to be easy.

Have you considered a personal tutor for the English?

 

My daughter had a horrid time with her Maths mock (GCSE Jan 2008) which gave her a "wake up" call. We got her into a local Maths tutor (1 to 1), six 1 hour sessions, for the six weeks leading up to her Maths exam. It took her from a D grade to B grade and gave her confidence a real boost.

Each session was £12.00, which for the end result I thought was money well spent.

ANH - is it just he didn't work, or has he a hidden problem with English? I've taught many adults to improve their English results and a common cause has been undiagnosed dyslexia or a specific learning difficulty. In many cases, it had been hidden for many years. My oldest learner was in his 70's before he was diagnosed.

Claret, I don't know what would motivate him . He's not one for material things although he was hankering after a racing bike which he was going to buy with his own money. I don't suppose we can really prevent that as we didn't use it as a condition of good exam results.

 

CCR, I definitely think we'll get a tutor if the English appeal doesn't work. Possibly for the Physics too.

 

Patricia, I'm sure he doesn't have any difficulties with English, he's just not very good at or interested in it (and he's lazy ). He was put in a by-pass class to go straight to Higher without doing a Standard/Intermediate so the school obviously thought he was pretty good .

Wishing you all lots of luck and fingers crossed for next school year. I find it so awful for youngsters if they haven't any idea what they want to do when they leave. DS is still in limbo (and he's quite lazy, but he has been applying for all sorts of jobs - they just aren't forthcoming - and he's very bright - which means nothing if he will not go to college and do the exams ). This extra year might give him a better idea. One of DS's friends gave up to work for a fencing company when he finished school. He loves it - outdoors all weathers and very little paperwork.

Hmmmm - I wonder about the higher English this year. Have just had my neice to stay and her friends were all phoning re.results. Quite a few failed English - and were top class and B grades in the prelim.

 

My neice wanted to do "higher tier" english - but will appeal the result of this year and hopefully will still be able to push forward. Sometimes the exams just don't suit the year - when I did highers it was the Maths. Funny though as neice was poor at Maths and got a B . I said this result would at least free her to concentrate more on her english, so all is not lost - and she has passed 3 out of 5 which is a great acheivement in itself.

 

I work in an English school - so we have a few more weeks before the results.
