gooner.girl
Have just ordered my gorgeous dog Milo (or Smiley Miley as he's otherwise known!) some Burns organic dog food from their website. Has anyone used this company before? How do you rate them? What other pet food brands do people feed their dogs and cats on? Is organic dog food a waste of money? I was going to go for the normal stuff but the organic 7.5kg had free P&P so worked out the same price. Burns caught my eye as they use free range chicken eggs and hens in their food.... Just interested to know what other people feed their animals... (i'm nosey like thats! )
chelsea
We've had 2 German Shepherds and I havent tried organic foods. Bracken is fed on Pedigree Adult food meals (in the pouches not the tins). From a pup she had Iams (eukanuba), but she got fed up with it - so we moved onto the traditional stuff. She is a very fit healthy dog (touch wood) and we've never had any medical problems with her. (age 7 now). I wouldnt personally buy cheap/non branded tinned food for her...but thats just mummy being fussy
Jools
Mine are on Burns - I just add a bit of "gravy" to it to make it a bit more palatable for my spoilt brats. Very reliable company, deliver when they say and not let me down yet.
ali-s
Both my dogs have Burns dog food. Scooby nearly 13 has the high oats. She was over weight due to lack of mobility in her old age. The high oats is a slimming food which also fills her up After being fed Burns she now has a waist and her mobility has improved Archie likes all the Burns flavours, his favourite by far is the Fish A 2kg bag lasts him 8 weeks Burns do not add any fillers so the result of this is smaller poos
AnnieP
My two also have it and love it! Rags is 14 and a very fussy eater. We have struggled all her life with getting her to eat dried food and now she absolutely adores this food. All of the varieties. Molly is our Airedale and has sensitive skin. We give her the lamb or chicken and rice and things have improved tremendously. I order from their internet site. It comes within 2 days, beautifully packaged, and if you buy the largest bags, its free delivery. I've had 4 big bags now through them, and every time there's a money off voucher for the next time. This time we got a voucher for a Christmas treat: some of their little biscuits for free! I think they're great!
KateB
My two currently have James Wellbeloved with half a pouch of Natures Menu put through it as they don't really like just the kibble. It's relatively low in protein so I don't end up with two Labs bouncing off the walls once they've had a walk. Despite being Labs they are very fussy though and do tend to get 'bored' although we've been much tougher recently on them and it seems to have worked - they now get 20 minutes to eat dinner and if they've walked away from it in that time then that's it. Not only does it ensure they eat their dinner but I don't consider it to be hygenic to have dog food around all day... However, I like the fact that Burns appear to be relatively ethical so there could be change on the horizon!
AnnieP
Kate, Molly used to be on James Wellbeloved. Believe it or not, the Burns works out much cheaper, as you feed much less. Molly used to have to be coaxed to eat the Wellbeloved by having gravy added . It was a chore! I can thoroughly recommend Burns. Why don't you look at their site and request a sample? Lesley
Jazz has Burns for breakfast but BARF the rest of the time. There was a long running thread on here in July, just as we collected Jazz. I'll look it out and post a link. Here it is... http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6169&highlight=barf

It took me ages to work out how to do it in the first place! Doh! Good to hear such great things about Burns, maybe i will try my cats on it as well if Milo gets on with it! Basset
Hi, I'm getting a Basset puppy in two weeks time (I'm so excited!!!), I'll try Burns after reading your comments. We used to feed our Cairn Terriers James Wellbeloved and they lived very healthily until the ages of 16 and 18. J

Happymama
I feed our lurcher (salukixwhippet is our best guess) and our Terrier (JRTxBasset is our best guess there too) on Pets at Home own additive free brand, it's artificial colour free, as the other stuff used to make the Daisy a bit loopy. It was recommended by the vet, and Daisy's defo calmed down a lot. Hard to tell with Teddy the terrier, he's still only 8 or so months old, but is getting better. James Welbeloved is the only other additive free brand sold in the high street, but is much more expensive. On the subject of mobility in older dogs, try boswellia extract. It's otherwise called indian frankinsense, and dosage for dogs is 2 capsules each day for 6 weeks then one as a maintenance dose. It really really works, our old collie-x was so stiff she could only lay on her side, and after six weeks on that stuff could lay on her belly with her legs under her and her head on her front paws, and curl round to put her head on her hind leg too. I got it online, can't remember where from, but it really really does work. I used to crack them open and sprinkle the contents on her gravy (well, she was a very old lady). ali-s
On the subject of mobility in older dogs, try boswellia extract. ). Thanks for that tip. I will look out for it Scooby's mobility is fine today She ran away on her afternoon walk on the beach. OH spent ages looking for her in the sand dunes and eventually found her in the fishermens shelter She is hiding in her bed now looking very sorry for herself

Basset
Hi, I can't wait to collect the gorgeous basset hound pup, and will definately post a pic! Just need to think of a name now, if anyone has any ideas?? My daughter wants to call her Tinkerbell, which I'm not sure will suit a basset! buffie
We used to give Burns and it is a good holistic food, uses broiler and free range meat and not battery (you don't get much free range pet food unless it is organic sadly) Other ell known brands use battery hen meat in their food. We feed all our kidlets on raw meat and bones now and it's been great. I get organic doggy bags from sheepdrove. BBx
Mel (& Paul)
our two have burns - lamb flavour - just cant QUITE bring myself to give them chicken flavour! and they get lovely juicy meaty bones from the local organic butchers (some of the bones look good enough for us )
madcatlady
Hi I have fed my now elderly Westie on Burns for some time he had skin problems which have cleared up since we changed to Burns so cant recommend it highly enough Fiona cattery entertainers
One Man Banned
Molly gets good old Eukanuba and as those of you who have met her, she's doing just fine on that! Although, like Mel, I can't let myself buy the chicken flavour foods - although the Lamb and Rice does have some chicken in so maybe we'll be needing to change that as I'm sure it'll be battery chickens used. Can't seem to get hold of toothpaste for doggies that isn't poultry flavoured you know, and she is too keen to lick it off the brush than have her knashers scrubbed with it! The Dogmother
You can use aloe vera toothgel on dogs Andrew - the Forever Living one is supposed to be good for them and my vet sells it for use on dogs.
Mel (& Paul)
We use Placque Off which is basically dried seaweed that you put on their dinner - a tiny amount,. It is sugar free, artficial colour and preservative free and it seems to be doing the trick
AnnieP
ooh! Where do you get that from Mel?
Mel (& Paul)
We got ours from the vets - its a small pot, cost about £9 but should last about a year. I dont know if you can get it from anywhere else, but it is manufactured by SweDenCare AB, Sweden and distributed by Molar Ltd in Wedmore - info@molarltd.co.uk.
