Where should we go next year?

Recommended Posts

Thailand! It's hot! Look for cheap flights, once you get there it isn't expensive to stay in guest houses and the food is reasonably priced.

If you are thinking European style food, Italy would be my favourite. The food is amazing, but I've mostly been to Livigno in the Italian Alps in the winter. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, and lots of self catering accommodation, as well as some reasonably priced half board hotels. It is a popular walking spot in the summer, also cycling, horse riding, there is a lake, it has duty free status, lots of shops.

I don't know how hot it would be though, or whether all of the restaurants, hotels, shops etc would be open in the summer.

Cheap children holiday All inclusive first choice was excellent to Corfu, book around christmas time to get good deals.

No children agree despite its recent problems Thailand too so cheap and we felt safer their than in London..land of the smiles brilliant holiday cheaper than going to some med coutries.

Or Gite in France but make sure you book the Ferry early to coincide or fly to the south I have used UK holiday lettings and they were great.

i love it out there and have been about 8 times in my 12 years of life and if you go there you can get a short flight to koh samui where you can stay but it is quite busy and loud at night :( or if you go to koh samui you can get a nice cheap ferry[with choice of dvd to watch!] and go to koh tao where i can highly recommend this place

The best holiday destination for us was Finland, we have been back several times in winter, we have been in the summer too but I wouldnt recommend that as the heat is stifling and the mozzies are as big as horses!

Another one for Thailand here. Go to Patong & stay at the Seaview patong hotel. Costs a bit to get there & stay at that hotel, but well worth it. Dirt cheap once you are there. Fly with Ethihad as the are marvellous. YOu will then need a Thai airways flight from Bangkok to Phuket. The most lovely place I have been with the most genuine people ever!

As complete grecophiles the Greek mainland is our favourite. Despite Kosmar going down with Excel last year :evil: there are some companies who do allow you to visit the less touristy areas. Food is ALWAYS good. We drink the water out of the standpipes at the roadsides in the villages with no ill effect (straight from the mountains :D ) and there's a huge cultural history.

We spent a year learning Greek a few years back (bit rusty at present) and even if you can only say a few words the greek people love it. They are so friendly and generous we could spend hours telling stories of how well we have been treated.

Just avoid July & August, when the peak period is. You'll find you'll be given treats before & after meals and they are only too glad to help.

Greek food is amazing.

Heaps of fresh seafood, grilled or barbequed.

And the most wonderful meaty, tomatoey casseroles :P

Great Greek salads,& herby grilled lamb too

They do like their meat over there, but I am sure the veggie options must be good too (Gigantes beans in tomato sauce comes to mind)

South of France for me, to keep it cheap,we drive there and camp(pretty much on the beach) for two weeks - it's a bargain if you have a large family! The supermarkets are fantastic as well! We usually have a one night stop over on a farm near Lyon which is stunning and has the most amazing cocks and hens I have ever seen!! They are huge!

My sister, her 2 teenage children and my mum and dad stayed at the above all inclusive and they loved it.

As for your question re tummy upsets in Thailand...I have spent 11 weeks in South East Asia in 4 separate visits and picked up a stomach upset once in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and a much lesser stomach upset in Bangkok, Thailand. Each time I had eaten in what looked like perfectly clean and popular places. My traveling companion was ill at the same time as me only in Bangkok. The irony is we had just finished a trip around what would I would have considered a higher risk area of SE Asia, (throughout Myanmar) with no tummy problems at all!

It wasn't as cheap this time, due to a poor exchange rate. 50 Baht to a pound instead of for example 70 Baht to a pound. A big difference!

Some examples from my notes:

Taxi from airport to Bangkok 370 Baht (it was 390 on the way back)

Small clean double room with en suite 850 Baht

Gin Fizz 110 Baht

Large Beer 100 Baht

Chicken Massaman (120 Baht) Soft shelled crab curry (180 Baht) large beer, rice, water - including service charge 500 Baht (so essentially a lovely meal for two for £10 - that was in a good restaurant by the river (Phra Arthit Pier?)

Get the non tourist ferry to the end of the line for 13 baht each. Takes about an hour. Get off and eat at the cafe near the temple. It looked fab but we were still full from breakfast so we just had a large beer and a water, which in this out of the way place was only 60 Baht

Sky train from Saphan Taksin (by the ferry) to National Stadium (shopping centres!) 30 Baht each, single fare.

Avoiding the posh food court on the fifth floor at MBK head up to the sixth floor food centre.

"braised pork limb" with fried rice and veg 40 Baht, small beer 50 baht, Duck noodle soup 40 baht. loads of choice and you can see it and point!

Apple sherbert sorbet (from franchise at sky train station) 40 baht

Cool corner cafe on Kho San Road, large beer 60 Baht, water 15 baht, Mai Tai 95 Baht

Back at the hotel (New Siam 2) the food was cheap and good and Spy Classic (a wine based alco pop 5% strength) was only 40 Baht.

I don't shop for souvenirs or clothing but I'm sure you could pick up some bargains at MBK. We just go to the shopping Malls for the Air conditioning and the excellent food!
