ali-s
We have had torrential rain here for over 24 hours. I have never seen anything like it since living in this area, although the town has been flooded badly several times. Had to take OH to work at 4am this morning and our lane was flooded badly with quite a strong torrent of water running off the fields onto the lane. The journey of 20 miles to OH place of work was nerve racking and I wasn't looking forward to coming back on my own. The town was OK on our way out but by the time I had returned the river had burst it's banks in places. A lot of activity in the town with people and sand bags. Quite a few roads closed off. A travelling fair was being escorted off their pitch which is very close to the river. The road which goes to our lane was fine when we left but by the time I got back was flooded. My little Panda got to the middle of the flood and then the lights dimmed, the engine laboured and I started to cry. I had to inch my way through the flood in first gear I was determined not to get stuck on a single track road in the dark. My Panda is amazing A cottage along the road had water lapping at the front door I knew I couldn't stop so sounded my horn several times to alert the occupants, there were no lights on in the cottage so the family must have been asleep. I got home to find our garden and drive flooded and our field ditch overflowing. I have had to drag the red Eglu plus run and convertor further up the garden as it was sighted at the end of the ditch. I have no idea where I found the strength to do this as I normally have to have help. I'm not sure whether myself and DS will be able to get into work today or DD get to school. I am not looking forward to getting OH from work this evening.

It amazes me how when we really have to we can find physical strength to do things normally we couldn't do, wel done for moving your eglu Karen x
ali-s
I think we might be cut off About this time of day there are a few cars using the road to get to the air base and farm vehicles going about their business. Nothing has gone by since I got home just after 5 o'clock I have phoned work to let them know I will be in late if at all. DD's school bus should be here at 8.30am, if it doesn't turn up then I will stay at home, if a large coach can't get through I am not driving in my little Panda. DS is supposed to be cycling 4 miles to work, I don't think that will be happening. OH should have taken a toothbrush and a clean pair of boxers to work
Ain't Nobody Here
Wow, you must have had a lot of rain . It's rained here solidly for 2 days too but we're on a hill. I hope it stops soon and you can get back to normal . Is your house safe ?
ali-s
The house is OK for now I hope. It is a single storey cottage so we can't go higher if water starts to get in. I have just moved the Eglu again. I can't move it any further away without dismantling the whole lot. The field ditch must be over 6 foot deep and normally just a muddy sludgy mess at the bottom. It has overflowed onto the lawn, drive and some of chickens area. There is water bubbling up between the paving slabs on the car's hard standing. I have seen one vehicle go down the road, a 4x4 and it was going very slowly. Just heard on GMTV that the river Lossie has burst it's banks in the town and people are being evacuated from their homes The river Spey has also burst it's banks. Part of this runs alongside of my OH work. It is still raining very hard
Jillus
Hi Ali, Commiserations, we too have had rain for more than 24 hours, the stream in our garden is now a raging torrent and the garden is totally flooded. Leuchars had 40 mm of rain in a few hours yesterday and was mentioned on the BBC news at 6. I am leaving early for work in a few minutes but with so many Fife roads closed do not know if I will get out, we live down a farm track and it now resembles a river. Good luck and hopefully will be on to hear better news from you later.

bluekarin
I was watching the weather report last night and saw the huge cloud of rain over Scotland. I really hope it subsides soon and the rivers go down quickly. Scary. But well done to your car - it was probably saying 'I know I can I know I can' ala Thomas the Tank engine! chickencam
I too thought about people in the north of Scotland when I saw BBC Breakfast weather this morning. I hope that the rain stops soon and that you stay safe and dry. If I were you I would stay at home and stay safe, I too can clearly remember how scary it was in the floods in this area 2 years ago. We live on the brow of a hill but we were still worried. Wishing you all well.

Egluntyne
I was listening to Radio 4 on my way home from work, and my ears pricked up when they specifically mentioned Elgin. I thought immediately of alis. Apparently it is grim up there at the mo.
ali-s
Hi everyone We are all fine and the house and animals are fine. Natalie's school bus couldn,t make it through the worst part of the flooding on the road. We watched it approach and then it turned round and went back. I really do not know how I managed to get through in my little car. Even now cars are coming down the road and either turning round or trying to get through. At one point there were three RAC vans at the scene with three cars stranded. I took Natalie to school myself (opposite direction) and the roads were passable. I couldn't get to work but when I phoned in the boss said they were very short of staff today. He came out in a huge rugged mini bus type vehicle which belonged to the school. The journey took over half an hour, normally takes less than 10 minutes. With over 600 boarding students needing feeding 3 times a day I could hardly say no (such dedication ) I took the decision to let the chickens free range unsupervised today. I didn't want them locked in the runs with no means of escape if the flooding got worse. When I got home from work they were all paddling in the water on the lawn even Bantam Bubbles. OH is going to get a lift into town if they can get through and then phone me so I can pick him up, not sure where as a lot of roads are closed. The rain has now stopped but I have heard we are due more tomorrow and Sunday. Our lane is now free of water as it has all flowed into garden The cottage is a little higher thank goodness than the flooded part of the garden. All the water from the fields surrounding us has fed into the ditch which I suppose is a good thing.
