Chickens inside the House.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was just wondering, who lets their chickens inside their house?

We've never done it, in fact I even installed a tall puppy / baby gate outside the back door with chicken wire along the bottom, so we can have the door open in the summer. (Pic will follow in a bit)

But I've seen some peoples pics of Chickens in their house and also on their sofa etc.

is this normal? don't they... "purge" inside the home? because its not that we have a problem with them actually coming in, its just the mess they might leave behind....

Just curious that's all. :)

The funny thing is, this is also the windowsill they sit on, yet they haven't worked out it would be a breeze to jump either onto or over the baby gate and get in the kitchen lol

I dont let adult chooks in the house unless they are ill

Chicks on the other hand are hillarious, we love having them in the living room and yes they do poo but our house is by no means immaculate anyway and any poos get wiped up and the spot sprayed with antibac spray

I had three sets of chicks in the kitchen up till yesterday, one set went outside permenantly yesterday and did nothing but moan all evening  I think they miss the telly

Most days we get a snatch & grab raid by at least 2 usually more marauding monsters, either because the gate has been left open or they've worked out how to get under the door when it's open...I just said to Koojie on another thread that Orpies aren't very bright...my hybrids however are very quick to catch on when there's food involved

On Monday DH was putting up the new (cube red) in the garden came back in for something, only to find that Snowdrop & Bluebell were inside the gate munching on a box of cooking apples which are awaiting my attention.....either they jumped the gate which is deliberately rickety to stop such actions or he shut them in when he went outside :anxious:

As a general rule mine aren't allowed in but I did take pity on them when it poured down with rain and the run door had blown shut in the wind so they were stranded in the garden.

Four very soggy chooks dripping on the living room floor.

The problem is the floor is tiled which is okay until they get a bit excited and start skidding all over the place - Torvill & Dean impressions all round.

Our girls are only allowed in when poorly, but mostly I'll be in the kitchen cooking and will hear the tell-tale bokking a little closer than it should be... look down and there's at least one cat and one hen pestering for food :roll:

Having said that, before now when its thrown it down and we've made a bee-line for the house, the girls have all raced bac kto their cube.. guess they see that as theirs, while the house is ours :D

Love the photos "Aint "Ooops, word censored!"ody Here" Hehe

Our oldest chook will inquisitively wander inside the back door if we leave it open, and one of the other chooks might follow, but I quickly shoo them out.... I'm squeamish and would hate for them to poop in the house.... since that particular time might end up being the dirtiest most disgusting poop, so I'd rather avoid it :shameonu:

As per another post, we bring them indoors if they are unwell, inside the pet carrier and with newspaper on the floor. Oh, and daughter gave our oldest chook a bath, and brought her indoors to dry her with the hairdryer  LUckily she was on newspaper because she did a disgusting poop... and even luckier, daughter was there to clear it up

The only reason cartier was allowed in - when she was dripping wet !!

awwww bless :) thats one sopping wet chicken :)

thanks all for sharing, it was just a random question, after seeing some photos of people with chickens indoors. we have no intention of letting ours in, we just wondered if it had caused complications for other people. e.g. we have carpets and didn't want to get chicken poop in the weft :)

Ours are absolutely never allowed in. No Never Never Never! :shameonu:

OH would go purple in the face with rage.

However when he is not there........

The three of them are always in the kitchen, especially Mabel the frizzle for whom trying to get on to the kitchen surfaces is a mission in life. They are bok bokking outside the french windows from about 4 o'clock, waiting for their porridge. Yes there is the occasional poo, but it is my bonding time with them. And it is quickly cleaned up off a lino floor. And I always disinfect anywhere they have been afterwards, honest!

Ours sometimes come in, but they're not really allowed.

Babs used to think she was a dog and would sit and watch the tele even if we weren't there  It was a leather sofa so there was never a problem wiping it.

My nan hates flapping so won't go in the room if the chickens are by the back door

hey

I don't allow mine in persay however 4 of them are quite capable of jumping over any barrier i put up so i quite often come into a room to find at least one of them in. With "purging" i have mostly tile flooring so it's relativly easy to clean and the rest is just a tissue and a bit of carpent cleaner if it doesn't wipe off. Chicken poo is considerably nicer than the things the cats and dogs somtime do/bring in so..
