I can't wait!

 

I reserved a young Lavender Aracauna months ago and I am collecting her on Saturday evening.

 

I am also taking Dave the silkie cockerel back to the farm on Friday and swapping him for one of these: pol columbian blacktail, goldline, black rock, OR a calder ranger. I am just looking them all up now to see which I like, but it's a very difficult choice as I like them all.

 

I'd have my own waitrose eggs, but I also love brown hens. hmmm hmmmmm

 

I will post photos at the weekend.

Our Miso was a Redcos - same as Calder Ranger. She was lovely and the most prolific layer of the 3.

Ah cool, only 3 to choose from then. I am tempted by the Columbian Black tail as its the waitrose egg bird! Not sure what a goldline is, but also tempted by the Black Rock! I did originally want a brown hen though! hmmmmm

My Black Rock, Nellie, is lovely. She is also a brilliant layer and hardly ever takes a day off. My Lavender Araucana is also lovely, and lays really blue eggs

A goldline is similar to a warren...the traditional looking little brown hen...I have a goldline & 3 ex-batts, very similar but Buttercup has creamy knickers & flecks on her wings and the batties are much more toffee colour knickers....Buttercup is probably the easiest of my lot to pick up & cuddle, and one of the nosiest too

Ah, thanks. I saw some warrens at longdown farm, hampshire. I know they are sold for £8 there so I will get one of the others as this is in exchange for a £20 silkie cockerel.

 

My friend is also trying to make me buy a light sussex hen as her Dad has bred some. Its because she knows I have a whole 8x10' aviary free now, but it needs repairing.

 

Oh cool, I saw some appenzeller hens when collecting some hatching eggs for my friend! They are great chooks. Love their spots. On my list too!! My friend is hatching some lavender aracaunas. I made her buy those eggs for her incubator. lol!

 

p.s. I was originally only going to have 2 hens %-)

Hi,

I chose a Columbian Blacktail! She is 17 weeks old.

 

I was so tempted by the goldlines though as they were the friendliest hens that crowded around us undoing our shoelaces, but the Columbians were also friendly.

 

I can pick her up fairly easily although she has just learnt to run away, but she grips my fingers with her feet then I can stroke her.

 

Just put her to bed in the cat run house in an open cat box with sawdust and mite powder. She is so sweet and wouldn't get off my hand for ages.

 

 

I will add pics of the Lavender aracuana tomorrow evening!

When will they arrive?

She is a nice hen, but a little flappy which is to be expected on only her first day here. She hit me in the face with her wing when I put her to bed last night and I have a puffy eye today. I hope its not a black eye.

 

I let her out into the garden yesterday afternoon (she was desperate) and Dotty has run to her a few times to peck so I've been standing outside keeping them seperate. I've only let her out a couple of times for short periods as its a bit stressful, but I want to introduce them as soon as possible. It all seemed better today so I think they have nearly sorted out who is boss especially as the new hen has started chasing Hetty so I think she is trying to be second top hen. I haven't let them get close though.

 

So here is the lavender aracauna who I just picked up. She is a bit sleepy in the photos!

Not sure of her age, but its 16 or 17 weeks. She is sleeping in the cat box shown in the pic and its all closed up, but next to the columbian blacktail. I am hoping the two new hens will get on straight away as they are new, but the lavender is much smaller. I won't let her into the garden for a few days.

 

I am enjoying this!
