do chickens ever seriously hurt you?

Recommended Posts

I have found if you need to handle them and haven't got a good hold, the claws are more damaging than a peck can be. If I ever need to inject one, turning it upside down to inject into the breast, a claw can come round and get you on the underside of your arm. Doesn't happen in the winter though.......too many layers of clothes to get through

I have never been injured and I have been pecked before (mistaken finger/raisin incident) but it doesn't really hurt.

Hubby works with lots of poultry daily and often comes home with scratched arms from their feet but it has never been serious or required doctors treatment so you will be fine!

They do rather change into velociraptors when they are presented with grapes, so I never hold those for them to peck on. Other than that they are gentle, sweet little girls who never scratch or peck. They sample the fastenings on my wellies and have a little probe at my wedding ring, but never really peck. The are lovely little girls.

I've been pecked a few times, sometimes you are faster than the chook sometimes not

Shiny things attract them as previously said, someones child was pecked in the eye (I guess because eyes are shiny) but if you dont hold them that close the chances are slim

I have been scratched with a claw, its left a scar on my chest but if I hadnt have worn a low cut top that day when I did the chickens (hurrying to go out) it wouldnt have happened

Only one of my hens pecks, and that is to draw my attention to her and give her a cuddle. Funny little thing :lol: it's only a gentle tap really. They all eat from our hands and never miss the food target. :D

I was quite afraid of the first hen of mine that went broody. She gave me a hard peck, but didn't draw blood

Answer to your question is. No, I have never been seriously hurt by a chicken............ Have You?

My Black Rock Joy can be a bit 'uncomfortable' when taking corn out of my hand if she is in a greedy mood. Rita the Lohmans will peck at anything to see if it's edible and sometimes has a go at my fingers when I am unlocking the run door - it does not hurt at all.

In the summer they loved by toe rings - but again it does not hurt at all.

NEVER NEVER wear red nail polish on your toes during the summer with open toed sandles :lol::lol:

......or on your finger nails.....mine prefer to peck them even over mealworms.

I also have a large freckle on my hand which Cookie likes to peck out several times before she realises its not food :)

When you first feed chickens by hand it can be quite a surprise - they are so hard, but I think your hands get used to it very quickly (plus I have a high pain threshold). The worst injury was inflicted by claws while trying to escape - a deep scratch that went the length of my forearm - hardly noticeable now, and they have a tendency to go through t-shirts. I have big birds and their wings can give you a big clout on the nose - ouch and a choice swear word. When they crouch they can be picked up so much easier - and it's all a matter of practice. I envy those who can pick up their birdies like the Omlet instructions - hah - I have to do a half nelson with a strangle hold (just kidding, just the half nelson).

Have plenty of TCP and Germolene to hand for those just in case moments!

Mind you our sussex is a dream girl - easily pickupable and doesn't bother struggling or flapping - she's fast becoming the favourite.

Yes I agree, wings flapped in the face are definitely more painful than being pecked. When I was first getting used to picking my girls up I didn't hold them tightly enough and a wing would often get loose and whip me round the face. You quickly learn though!
