patsylabrador
When I was reading this I couldn't help wondering what on earth you Omleteers would say. Even as a newbie I thought her attitude a bit cavalier. telegrapharticle Edited April 2, 2010 by Guest
Stevie
Its just her opinion and it is the Telegraph afterall...
Chucky1
Hi Patsy - I agree I did not warm to the author at all. It struck me that she did not really care. We all make mistakes but she seemed to be making a virtue of it.
Daphne
She should be thoroughly ashamed of herself - I can't see how neglecting to put hens away, losing them to the fox and then writing about it for money is in the least bit edifying. There are also several inaccuracies in the text and photo. Cheap journalism for Easter. Sorry, that was a rant wasn't it
badgerbluebadger
Is this just me but people like her should not keep chickens? She seems to show no care and has not learned by her mistakes. I have a small urben garden with foxes trying to get at our girls all the time - the only way to make sure they are safe is to never leave them unattended when they are free ranging. Chucky Mama
Who on earth let this article go out It is a shocker, she really should be ashamed of herself.
chick wiggle
Stupid woman! I cannot believe this woman thinks this is funny, and shes gonna do it all again As with all animals, some people just should not be allowed to have them and breath! Egluntyne
Good lord. Imagine the furore if the word 'chicken' was replaced with the word 'puppy'.
Seagazer
The thing is that most of us have accidentally left doors open and had terrible panics if a fox has got our girls or if, as with me, the girls were fine. But surely she should have learnt from the first two? She seems to think its funny. She seems so cavalier with the poor chickens. I really, really hope she reads the comments at the bottom of the page and takes everyone's advice and doesn't get any more.
Henhathnofury
I was thinking the same thing as Egluntyne. If this has been an article about dogs, cats or rabbits...the RSPCA would be involved. Made me very depressed. Thank goodness for lovely people like the ones here...........
phenna_family
What an absolute disgrace she is, she should be barred from keeping any animals never mind our feathery friends. Cannot believe that this article was allowed to be published. I hope any respectable breeder has seen this article and will refuse her anymore chickens. It makes me so angry! Lewis
Its how she thinks its ok and makes a joke about it Some of the things she said are a bit stupid too - don't feed pellets + corn because they get bored and overexcited/aggressive? Cranfield Kate
I just posted a snitty response but i wanted to be a lot snittier. someone should send the RSPCA round.
Reikiranf
I'm amazed that the article was actually printed, the fact that she views her incompetence and the demise of the poor chickens as joke just beggars belief I recently lost 2 of my lovely girls and was devastated, I was a bit worried about posting incase anyone thought "pot & kettle" I hope that some animal rights protesters find out where she lives and teach her a lesson before she deprives and more chickens of caring home where they will be loved and appreciated
Tutti Frutti
I wrote a controlled but stinging reply last night and it hasn't been published. I can't BELIEVE it's had so few responses so I think they're being heavily vetted. But a reply from the lady who was giving the course HAS been included and she said "...The writer was here in the Autumn and they took some excellent photos of youngsters holding the hens and enjoying the day old chicks. None have been used!It seems we have the writer with a poorly hen and it appears ons of her sister's pure breed hens. I have to say the structure of the article and the indifference to animal welfare seems extraordinary. " So hopefully Cassandra Jardine WON'T be getting any more chooks - from Mary Bruce at Churchlands Farm at least
OwenLdn
I just read the article and came online and am glad to see this thread as I couldnt believe not only the tone of her story- but the mistakes in her article. Why did the telepgraph think this was a suitable easter article? Ive posted a response but dont think anything has been published since 10:30 this morning. Blue-DiamondChick07
Good lord. Imagine the furore if the word 'chicken' was replaced with the word 'puppy'. Thats a very good point. There is no difference IMO. Still an intelligent animal.
MargotT
Strangely enough my comment never made it online either.... However, they now have a post on there from someone named Marc Henry which pretty much sums up most peoples feelings.
