foreveryoung
ive been reading a lot about cockerels and i would love to have one, but im worried about the noise the make (well not for my neighbours sake lol(one has really noisy kids the the other is pretty much out of it 99% of the day), although I should really even for just a quiet life lol.) are they really noisy???? Snowy
Yes Even if your immediate neighbours don't object, he will still be very audible for at least 500 metres around. That may be OK if you are very rural, but not in a built up area - I think you may have problems, sorry
madchickenlady
Yes. They are really, really noisy. At unsociable hours. They can also be very aggressive. Unless you have land, and live a good bit out in the country, its not a good idea. Sorry
Redwing
They are a nuisance no matter where you are its just that in some parts people are more tolerant than others eg you expect it in the country, I agree with the 500m comment, I can hear a cockerel crow half a mile away especially on a still day they can also cause problems within a flock, they will 'hassle' the girls and can cause cuts and feather loss, yes they are charming a lot of the time but not all of the time cockerels do add a dimention to a flock but if you end up causing a problem for your neighbours you could find your whole flock comes under question

Egluntyne
Yes Even if your immediate neighbours don't object, he will still be very audible for at least 500 metres around. That may be OK if you are very rural, but not in a built up area - I think you may have problems, sorry I agree with Snowy. I had a cockerel, home hatched and destined for the table. The noise he made was unbelievable when he started crowing. It would have wakened the dead. It would have been unrealistic to expect my neighbours to put up with it, inan urban situation, so he met his destiny.
legend21
My husband would love a cockrel, I shall show him these comments when he comes home from work Jackie
Pikey
What Cole my pekin cockerel lacks in size he makes up in noise......in fact I've never known a noiser cockerel! He has a very piercing shirll of a crow and usually kicks off about 630 (was 530 until the clocks went back) when the birds outside start dawn chorus. He sleeps in the porch of my small one bed house so I get woken up at this time.....he then literally keeps crowing on and off for next couple of hours. I put him out at 8 (9 on a weekend) where he crows on/off throughout the day. He also is the ring leader of the "I've laid an egg" song with the girls....he starts then all the rest of them join in. Thankfully none of my neighbours have complained BUT I know only a matter of time esp with warmer weather approaching and people having their windows opened. On a positive note another Omletter has a cockerel that doesn't crow at all and had one before that who made a bit of noise first thing in the morning and that was it Cole is a lovely little character who keeps me amused with how he looks after the girsl.....and the little chuckling sound he makes to let them know hes found food is lush My advice would be to test the water with your neighbours and see what they say. Problem is once you've got him it will be difficult to part or to find an alternative. Oh and if you do get one.......photos are a must
tom123
Yes they are noisy! As Pikey has already mentioned, I had two previous cockerels who never crowed or did for a little while and then stopped and never did again! They were great but sadly both got eaten by the fox They were both Pekins however every other pekin I have ever heard has been very noisy! (Including Pikey's little boy!) Daphne
If you live near other people, the only way I could recommend would be hearing your prospective boy crow before you bought/were given him. By and large they are noisy and it would be unfair on neighbours. Bantams tend to be higher pitched and screechy but still noisy; its worse in a way as LF can be a lovely deep cock-a-doodle doo. I know there are some quieter birds - I have a neighbour with one (its a pekin!) - but as a general rule they are loud and there is very little excuse you can make to an innocent neighbour as your bird wakes them up as the sun rises. Its a real shame as a nice natured cockeral is a mighty fine bird!
THF Nick
Ours can be noisy but I've discovered that letting him wonder the garden as soon as he wakes up distracts him. The only real time he kicks off is if he hears his Dad (next garden along) crowing and then it can go on (and they have just started right now funnily enough) for ages. Redwing
i did have one that crowed at 3:30am last summer I also have another that crows in the dark if he can see light from the house Luckily I live in the country and many of my neighbours have cockerels I do ahve one that hardly crows, he is a Pekin but is unusually laid back and lets the other cockerel in the group make all the noise
madchickenlady
OP, can I suggest that you youtube videos of crowing cockerels? There are some very good vids on there, and they will give you a taster of just how loud even a small cockerel can be
craftyhunnypie
My pekin boys are quite shrill - especially Bingo. The Mighty Spongebob doesn't crow much these days - he's now 3 & whether it has something to do with him being mature I don't know. Scooter the silkie has a crow like a trumpet - quite loud. Boon the huge cochin has a long travelling deep crow - but hardly crows at all. A dutch bantam crow really tickles me - 10 out of 10 for effort, but it cracks me up...you should watch on youtube. I have fabulous neighbours & everyone local worries if theydon't hear the cockerls! Do you know anyone who could let you borrow a cockerel for a week to see what comments you get from any near by living people ? I'm sorry, but I am one of those cockerel loving people. I love my boys to bits. Emma.x
chelsea
I also love cockerels and would love one, but if you are in a built up area I wouldn't advise it. Even if your immediate neighbours say "they don't mind" you have to consider everyone in the neighbourhood. Some cockerels crow all day aswell. BeckyBoo
Yes, sorry to add to the doom and gloom, I've had several, the brahma boy had a lovely deep crow, it was beautiful. Sadly it started in the early hours, anywhere between 3.30 and 4.30 in the summer and was continuous all day until it got dark at 10ish, and even then if anything disturbed him in the night he'd crow. Then he started having a go at my son and I when we went in the run so he had to go. They are visually stunning, and the sound is so evocative, but whilst it's lovely it's also unfair and I could understand if a neighbour ended up going down the environmental health route. Noisy kids are one thing, cockerels win that competition hands down. BeckyBoo
The Dogmother
I love cockerels as much as the next person, but someone a mile away has two and I can hear them clearly when I am walking the dog of a morning... nice at this distance, but not to live near if you're in a built up area. They don't just crow in the morning either!
