Geoid
If your stranded, get to Spain! Royal Navy ships are heading over there. A little off topic, did you know that COBRA stands for Cabinet Office Briefing Room A...
Christian
My throat is sore today, I wonder if it is ash related. I wouldn't fancy piloting the first trial planes. Did they draw straws Willie Walsh was on the BA one, don't know if he's brave or daft?? I could think of one or two other words for him I spent much of yesterday outside as it was a lovely day but regreted it yesterday evening. Terrible congestion, raw throat, puffy gritty eyes and my nose is now red windows closed overnight and I've hardly ventured outside and it's improved but still uncomfortable. I woke up at 11.30 last night. Couldn't breathe properly, am attractive snail tail across the pillow from a runny nose (ok, too much info) and throat that was red raw. Came downstairs and had chocolate, which really helped. My tablets aren't working for hayfever and they always do, so it much be the ash. Seagazer
I felt the same last night, almost like a mini panic attack. I've got a sore throat and runny nose today. but I haven't noticed any ash so might just be a bit of a cold.
Valkyrie
I have been drinking loads of water but still that gritty feeling won't go. Then of course I'm spending every other 5 minutes dashing to the loo. I reckon I've had more than my quota for today. I can't smell any sulphur (thought I might have earlier, but then I did boil eggs for lunch ) although I can smell a dusty, musty smell and my nose won't stop running either - not the cold this time, that's finished with apart from cough and croak. Only one little plane today.
AJuff
OH is hoping to fly from Sharm to Belfast tonight. I am hopeful.
Ziggy
I'd not like to be piloting one of those planes. TBH, they all want to get back airborne as soon as possible, but if a plane full goes up and is damaged/crashes because of the dust, they will be in deep poo, so I'd rather that they play safe TBH. Just how I feel... I understand how badly airlines want to get going again, and I more than understand all stranded people who want to get moving, and I also know the world tends to be a bit paranoid these days and safety measures can be a bit 'over the top' in some instances, but this is serious and until it is well accepted that people in planes will be safe, and that the cloud is ok to go through in all places (not sure if such a cloud is consistent, or different in various places), personally I'm not keen on human lives being risked for the greater good of economy!! With DH a frequent traveller and his business strongly depending on flying, I know he'll get awfully stressed if things don't get better soon, but personally I'd rather have everybody on the ground alive, than everybody up there in the sky and even just one plane crashing down killing anyone because of a warning that was ignored out of rush to get things back to normal... It's hard to know the truth, reading up all the news... is it safe, is it not?... feels like airlines say it is, but surely they are not un-biased either... It's hard to go from one hope to another and another... I hope he gets there soon and safe!!

The Dogmother
We have lot of very fine dust on all surfaces outside this evening. Rather like a light polishing compound, it is hard and finely abrasive. I used an eye was when I got home today as my eyes felt gritty. greyhoundgirl
We are on the 'trip of a life time' with the children in Disney, Orlando. Holiday finished last Thursday but we are still here with no idea when we'll get home. I've got the dog out of kennels and moved to my Mum's as it's so expensive but our and chicks are suppossed to be arriving next week. I'm so excited I just hope we are home by then, otherwise I'll have to delay them. But I think I'd rather be here than fly if it's unsafe. It's currently pouring outside so we don't even have the sunshine. Hopefully It'll be a lovely day tomorrow and we can get out with the children. And ultimately there are people who are in much worse situations than us.
patsylabrador
It's starting to sound like a lot of the difficulties have been created by the panicked, knee jerk reaction of our government and it's agencies. I'm so looking forward to a government that can actually run a country instead of just being an embarrassment. Hopefully they will listen to the experts and engineers, I read that the plane that lost use of all it's engine power flew through the actual plume and lets face it, technology has moved on enormously since then. Fingers crossed for all your friends and relations. My son has got new flight next Monday. Poor Icelanders, the misery just goes on and on. Mean French though - they stopped Dan Snow with his mini Dunkirk!

Not really, the exact same thing will happen to any plane that flies through a cloud of volcanic ash. If anything, it would be worse than what happened before, with jet engines being more powerful, sucking in more air (and ash), the silica in the ash will turn into glass and coat the turbine blades causing them to stop. I found this map of aircraft in the air and where the ash cloud is (from the BBC)

The Dogmother
Yes, it really shows the situation clearly. I heard this morning that Madrid airport is acting as a hub - people can fly into there , then travel overground from there onwards. Our MD's PA manage to get him a berth on a ship out of Faro, but he's since decided to stay there... how frustrating for her. I had to use an eye bath last night as they were very gritty, my nose feels all caked inside this morning.
Mrs Webmuppet
I too have sore eyes and have been sneezing more than normal. I haven't found any gritty dust on the Cube or car, just the normal dust!

A chickychickychick-ENN!!
ThisIsLondon.com reports that Nato fighter jets have been damaged by the ash. Not sure how different they are from big commercial planes, but that suggests to me that it's not been a knee-jerk flight ban, no matter how inconvenient and economically damaging it is and how much Willie Walsh wants his big fat profits back. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23825652-navy-may-rescue-passengers-as-150000-britons-remain-stranded-abroad.do
