Jennifer Jane
Out ex-batt and top hen Mabel had never fully recovered after her illness a few weeks ago. A course of Baytril perked her up, but this week she went downhill so quickly. At the weekend she was free ranging happily in the sun, trilling contentedly to herself, and I noticed that her feet looked a bit yellow. On Monday my OH remarked that she was stumbling a bit. By last night she was off her legs completely though still eating and taking an interest in her surroundings. She died overnight. When I watched her scrabbling around in the sunshine at the weekend my heart was full with happiness and today my heart feels empty. I know that she had a much better life these last few months, and she experienced what I hoped for her - to free range in the sunshine. jennydavies
Dear Jennifer, I am always sad to read that someone has lost a dearly loved pet. But without people like yourself who take on these poor creatures and make their lives so much better, that dear little chicken would never have seen the blue sky and felt the warmth of sunshine. In France, there is no scheme to rehome battery hens, otherwise we would have helped some. Little Mabel has lived out her last years in a loving environment with a caring owner, that means so much. docsquid
Mabel was one of the lucky ones - she escaped to a wonderful loving home, and got to see the sun and scratch the ground. Many ex-batts don't. RIP little Mabel.

sadietoo
So sorry to hear about Mabel..but the words from your post that really caught my attention was that in spite of the baytril she was out trilling contendedly to herself at the weekend, and even though off her feet she was still taking an active interest in her environment just before the end.... I just hope I am doing the same when my demise is approaching!!! Happy and well loved chooks have no regrets..and nor should you...this was a loved and well cared for pet...you will have happy memories of her foreverxxxxxx
