txswanie
Just out of interest, how many eggs do you eat per week? I think I am eating about 4 or 5 actual eggs and then whatever is in baked goods. That's way more than I used to eat when I didn't have the girls. I did have high cholesterol but it's under control now. I wonder if that's too many, they are so yummy though. Im going to have one now... Colette

susanb
Did you know that the "health police" have now said that we can eat as many eggs as we like? They have worked out that cholesterol in the food we eat is not the most important factor causing high cholesterol in our blood streams, and so they no longer have any recommended limit to how many eggs to eat. So eat as many as you fancy without worrying about it We probably eat 6 - 10 per week (scrambled or fried egg sarnies are our favourite)

I can never keep up with what they are saying. Anyway, good news for us chicken owners. My fav is boiled and then mashed in a cup with a little butter...oh and dont forget the toast soldiers. ISCA
Yes it is true, eat as many eggs (within reason) as you wish. However, it depends how high you mean by "high cholesterol". If it is excessively high there is likely to be a familial component and you are likely to be on medication and needing to see a specialist. If that were the case I would discuss it with them. Gelbel
Over the week I would say about 7-9. Just had the old cholesterol done and it's under 5. I never take a s"Ooops, word censored!" of notice of the health doom mongers - as already mentioned eggs were 'bad' for you now they are OK. I have the inherited form of high cholesterol and am on medication (have been since I was in my 20's) and my GP has said that the cholesterol from eggs does not affect my condition at all, in fact the protein in the eggs is far more beneficial overall, so she has said eat as many as I want to. On a typical week, I probably have about 12-15, although a lot of that is within cooking, although I do have an egg for breakfast most days. JanTheDiver
I have about 10-15 a week on average and have done for a long while (even before becoming a chicken mummy). I have just reduced my cholesterol from 6.9 to 5.5 in under a year, so this proves eggs are not the culprit Bring 'em on
shoura
My cholesterol is about 8 and I now ignore it! I eat as many eggs as I want and don't worry about it. Dietary cholesterol only affects 10% of ypour blood cholesterol at most.

There you go then Though there are different types of elevated blood lipid syndromes, so it always best to discuss these things with your doctor, but at the end of the day, it's informed free-choice for all (and the evidence does change from time to time as we know ). Personally I have never worried aout how many eggs I eat in a week. Some weeks it may be nil, other weeks 10+. Once mine start laying I suspect it will be every day! The latest culprit food blamed for precipitating coronary artery disease is processed meats, specifically sausages. Now that is bad news as sausages are my one weakness Especially with a fried egg. Nom, nom, nom.
Busybird
Our family (5 of us) get through a couple of dozen eggs a week. This is a lot more than we ate before we had chickens. OH likes to see me using the eggs rather than selling them to friends (which I do with the rest that the girlies produce) as it makes him feel all the money I spend on them is being at least partially offset by a reduced grocery bill. We have cut down hugely on the amount of meat we eat and I do a couple of main meals based on eggs each week as well as using them as sandwich filling. The Dogmother
Good for you lot I understand that eggs are the source of the most complete form of protein.
chicken bark
After reading all that it will be scrambled egg sarnies for me at lunchtime. Yum. (tummy's already rumbling) I did read somewhere that cholesterol levels in your own hens is less than in commercial free range eggs. I'm just glad they got rid of that 2 eggs a week rule. txswanie
This is great news, I am glad people are eating their eggs and not worrying. I also have inherited high cholesterol and am on medication. It did come down while I was eating the eggs, so they must be ok. I had to laugh about offsetting the grocery bill. I have not dared to work out how much a single egg has cost me if i take all the expenses into account. Can you imagine???? Anyway, that's not why we have chickens. thanks guys.. batcatz
Two a day on average unless I have a four egg omlet/omelette. It's good to know eggs probably don't affect cholesterol levels. I took part in research years ago to see if it could be inherited as my Nan has high cholesterol. I think mine was borderline and I was supposed to change my diet. I haven't been tested since so no idea what it is now and I am not on any medication. The week of the blood tests I ate eggs every day so suspected that was the reason. I could eat eggs for breakfast and dinner. yummy.
