Explaining the forum to a stranger.........

Recommended Posts

At work today I got on to the subject of literature with a customer who was buying a bookmark (as you do!), & I mentioned that I organise an online book group, which she showed an interest in.

I then had to explain that yes,all the members are my friends, but I haven't actually met any of them, just spoken to them online.

She asked about the forum & I went on the explain how we had all bought the same sort of chicken house & that is how we virtually met.

This was met by a blank stare :lol:

It really does sound a bit odd when you say it out loud!

I know what you mean. I did used to say someone off the Omlet forum said blahblahblah, which normally was registered with a knowing nod of the head by the friend/ member of family I was speaking to. Knowing full well they had no idea what I was talking about.

Now, to save any embarrassment, I just say 'my friend said . . . .' and not expand on where I know said friend

Hehe! On a similar note, I renewed my contents/buildings insurance tonight and the call handler laughed when I asked if my Eglus would be covered. I had to say to him, no I'm serious! Then he put me on hold "to ask someone" - I actually think he was laughing!

(*turns out I'm covered for losses in the garden to max £500 so that's not enough - I know I've said it before but I think Omlet should sell Eglu insurance!)

I've had the same conversation with loads of friends ... and mother when we've met people.

She still doesn't 'get' forums - I just say its facebook for my chicken friends

I just say 'my chicken friends' too, now :P

Just try not to get them mixed up!

I've realised that I can't have one single converstaion without saying "on the forum....." :? - my family are used to it now and often ask what the forum think of certain things......whether to buy something.......do the forum members have?.........etc. I have found out so much from this forum.....the day when I don't learn something new will be the day to give up :D

A few years ago some friends I met on another forum and I went to Ireland together for a few days to see a band. The conversation with 'real' friends went something like:

So you're going to see that band again..........3 times..........In 3 days.......In Ireland.........With some people you met on the internet????

At which point most people generally backed away.... :D

The two friends who shared that trip with me I now meet up with frequently and will I think be friends for life.

Two friends I have met through the forum are on my 'top ten friends' list.

I find people are generally absolutely appalled when I tell them that I am meeting with people I know through the internet. It goes against absolutely everything we advice others not to do.

I just refer to you guys as "my chicken friends".

I've been on the internet a long time, I have a number of friends I met online that have been freinds for a long time, last year someone came to my summer party that I last saw when I was pregnant with James (he was 7 that day!) and I have only met offline about twice but we've known each other for a good 10 years. 2 more of my friends from that group actually live in the same town as my Granny and always say they would pop round if I was worried about her! I've met one of them once and the other twice before my granny moved there!
