Sat Nav.............but which one ?

Recommended Posts

Help..............I'm going to have to buy a Sat Nav but having spent 1/2 hour in halfords my head is hurting :?:?:?

What one do you have and is it any good :?::?:

I need one that is fool proof and very easy to use and setup and not too big. Doesn't need to do anything fancy (connect to my ipod, have bluetooth, drive the car :wink: ) just tell how to get to where I need to be :D:D

Thanks

I think the TomTom is cheaper purely because is quite simple and does what you want rather than have all these weird additions and things you'd never use but pay twice the price for........we have the older model and it still has a bluetooth connection for looking up problems on the road with your mobile if you feel so inclined - we haven't and it still works really well. It does get a bit arsy with you if you go the wrong way so just be prepared for a bit of attitude

Just before Christmas I was parking my car outside Dunelm when a battered blue van pulled up next to a Range Rover parked nearby...a bloke I would not like to meet on a dark night jumped out, put a brick through the window and yanked out the sat nav thingy, leapt back into the van and sped off.

I made a mental note not to ask father Christmas for a TomTom.

I've managed without one so far.....and don't want to end up in a river or the middle of a ploughed field.

My friend has one which speaks like Elvis! She still gets lost!

We have a Navman - and we hate it with a vengeance

I've reverted to maps and AA route planner.

 Yes, they don't work well in St. Albans!

But, we had a Sat Nav early on for work, able to find customers so quickly in unfamiliar towns.

It was brilliant, as long as you use a map and your own judgement too, or you can suddenly feel stranded or out of the way, always have a rough idea where you want to go.

But, most of the time it was brilliant......

....until some idiot smashed the car window to steal it...& it was an integral system...absolutely no use to them...and I'm lost (literally) without it :(:(

So, have been reading this with interest as I could do with a modern, portable one...which I would never leave in the car.

Yes, even when we were 100m away and at the end of your road you could hear it screaming at us to turn the opposite way - your phone directions were much more help

I also have a TomTom 500 and find it very good with clear maps that show you far enough ahead to anticipate junctions etc. I have always found my way and i am terrible with directions.

Make sure you put it out of sight when you park up and rub the ring mark off the windscreen thieves love to pinch them they are the must have of the moment and are stolen to order.............

When I went to Tesco last week there was a police commuinty officer handing out free sat nav dusters to people, just to rub the ring off the windscreen :D

Do this even if it isn't in the car,as its an advert that you have one, which may be stashed in your glove compartment :?

Don't store it in the car either - pop it in your bag once you get to where you are going,& bring it into the house when you get home.

Lots of advice..........brill.............thanks :D:D:D

I only want to have a sat nav for long not been on before journeys (got quite a few days out planned this year) - I have always used my trusty map and planned my route in advance (never got lost.......yet :D:D ) which I will still always do.

Quite often on 'days out' my mum likes to come with us and as long as i've marked the map pages, written down the route and ensured she has the right pair or pairs of glasses with her :roll: she's quite happy to act as navigator :D:D But as we've got a few trips planned that mum's not joining us for and the children are still only at the learning to navigate stage  I thought I would get a Sat Nav just as a back up.

I hope that Mike doesn't speak to you like that Buffster! I might have to have words with him if he does

Rosie is brilliant at navigating - much better than Phil :lol: I just write out the route and mark the pages in the road atlas and away we go.... just don't rely on me, if I'm a passenger, I fall asleep before we get to the end of the road

I agree with what most people have said so far

Wipe the ring, hide the stalk and don't just keep the sat nav hidden in the car.

OH has Tom Tom, it has the voice of "Jane" or "Tim"

It has a night mode which is less bright, and even I can use it, so it must be OK

You have to remember to turn it off as it doesn't do it automatically (obviously  ). I've had it talking in my handbag before.

Don't follow it blindly it will happily take you the wrong way or tell you to do U-turns
