Problem At The Supermarket

Recommended Posts

Please Note

The opening poster here was BERTIE MCSQUIRTY not Egluntine. I inadvertantly deleted their opening post  Bertie has very kindly re written her opening post which is:

i went to the supermarket to pick up some lunch, when i went to the till, the man behind the counter (un beknown to me) said something to me which made me feel very uneasy / embarrassed and i wanted the floor swallow me up.

the comment was made with gross sexual intent.

i rang the manager and complained on my return to the office

Crikey, how dreadful.

I once had to complain about the conduct of an unpleasant individual who works at the local Tesco.

I made sure they realised that I expected action to be taken, but all they would tell me, when I followed it up by letter, was that the appropriate disciplinary action had been taken. They would reveal nothing more because of ... you've guessed it ... data protection.

That's awful

I had a cocky supermarket worker make a 'smart' comment to his mate about me. He was trying to unload his crate but I had leaned over to get some cheese from the fridge and was obviously in his way (not the other way round, of course). His comment was along the lines of me being a nuisance and stopping him doing his job. I turned to him and made a big deal of over apologising, very loudly. He did go a bit red!

One comment that did shock me was a lady on the till. She asked if OH and I needed a hand packing, I said no, OH would do the packing and I would do the paying :D . Her serious response was "Oh well, it's probably his money anyway" :?

We viewed a house a few years ago and the estate agent made a very inapproriate comment relating to the fact there was a lock on the study door. I was horrified and couldn't wait to get out of the house!!! I think a lot of them think they can get away with comments like this. He got a stern talking to about it from his manager.

I hope it wasn't in Waitrose!

I like to chat to people as they come through my till, and vyou do need to be aware that different people can take things in different ways.

Mostly I just admire the hunky rowers!

I hope they follow this up. It sounds like some retraining may be in order.

Am I the only one who wants to know what he actually said? I'll get me coat.....

On a more serious note, I think some people are genuinely offensive, others simply just don't have any clue what is appropriate, and of course, different people are offended by different things. For example, I wouldn't have been offended by the estate agents comment above, although I probably would have laughed to my husband afterwards about how innapropriate it was/what was the guy thinking etc. Generally though, levels of customer service everywhere are appalling.

I hope you are not too upset about the comment and that the supermarket sort this out to your satisfaction. The mere fact you were so upset by it means something needs to be done.

I did wonder what was said as some people mean things in different ways - either way, hope something happens as a result of it so its not said again.

If you are serious about following it up (and it sounds pretty serious from what you have implied) I would do it in writing. I would write to the store manager, and try and find their complaints procedure and follow that as well. (Guessing their website may provide you with info). And if that fails, go for the top!

Telephone calls or conversations in the supermarket are easy to "forget" if the manager doesn't really want to follow it up - once something is in writing it is a bit harder for them to avoid.

And you never know, if nothing else, you may get some vouchers.... :wall::roll:

No i too would like to know what was said but was too shy to say so. i do hope you get it sorted and Midori - leave the coat at home - its too flipping hot and sticky for a coat. Eglutyne - i would've risked arrest for assualt if i was that upset believe me. However i have been known to verbally wipe the floor with people who've upset me so probably could've done it without whcaking him.

Goodness me

I also agree about doing it in writing and keeping copies of what you have sent. Also in any telephone conversation mark down who you are speaking to. If no reply in 7 days from the letter being sent, follow this up with a phone call - keep pestering them until you get a response!

I am  at these experiences.

Please do follow it through to the conclusion; he really can't be in a customer-facing role and make inappropriate comments like that. I've had to complain about a similar situation myself in the past, and found that it's hard to get the result that you'd hope for

thanks all, feel a bit better today.

the supermarket manager hasn't rang me back today yet, although there may be a message on my work answerphone for tomorrow.

i've emailed a couple of people what he said, but basically it was to to with the lower half of my body for which he made a comment or two of what he would like to to with them!! (and he appeared serious)

i have never knowingly met this person before and prior to this the only other conversation at the till was the initial hello!!

i'm not after vouchers, my concern is if he says this to someone more vulnerable than myself (and i consider myself fairly strong in character)

Blimey, from the sounds of what he said I am not surprised! At least you have the character to pick this up and challenge it!

As the manager hasn't rung you back I'd be ready to fire off a letter to head office tomorrow. Would have said do it tonight but you have said there may be a message for you on your works answerphone.

What he said is not acceptable and to be honest he shouldn't be in a public facing role, it's a little worrying aswell that someone would say this sort of thing to a complete stranger :anxious: so no wonder you are concerned and quite right to report it. :? I really hope they don't palm you off with vouchers.

I think you should see manager with you OH or a friend and this guy should be sacked. As a lady the wrong side of 40 I know if in the unlikely event a man were to say something like that to me I'd have wiped the floor with him and made a spectacle of him. If you are younger you may not always be assertive enough to do that. This guy is a perv and needs knocking into line and quick.
