What a find!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I've always hope I would find one of these.......Carl came across it last night.............

A giant puffball :D - the one mushroom that can't be confused with anything poisonous  .

I was in the middle of cooking risotto at the time so I cut a few slices off and fried it. I can't say it tasted of much but it was very nice.........and we're both still here!

We'll have some more tonight cooked with bacon as most recipes suggest. It's the first one we've had in the four years we've been here.

Wow lucky you. As Christian says HFW stirred my interest.

We have field mushrooms in our field (did I mention we'd bought 3 acres?) but weren't sure what they were until my friend picked and ate them all.

The only other fungi we have found look like cherry tomatoes initially and then turn black. Have steered very clear of these.

Last year we were at the local farm shop and they had one on the counter found in a field but no-one knew what it was. We told them and were given half of it as a thank-you! Not half as exciting as finding your own tho :D Its not the most tasty thing, I think we fancied it up a bit with garlic and fresh herbs and cooked in tasty fat (like your bacon) or a flavoured oil. I wonder if you dried it whether it would get a bit more concentrated?

Pity they don't taste of anything!

We had grandchildren staying overnight so they wanted to try some for breakfast - Jake wanted to make a bacon sandwich with two slices of mushroom as the bread.....Lauren wanted 'egg on mushroom' - they both hated it! At least they tried it, but Jake would rather have played football with them! They only managed to eat them slathered in tomato sauce.

OH went for a walk with his cousin's OH and one of their boys while we were out west this week. They came home with 2 small puffballs - bigger than a hockey ball but way, way smaller than those giants! They also found chicken in the woods (or chicken of the woods???) at the end of the garden. They all ate the chicken - I abstained in case I had to call 999!
