School Hens

Recommended Posts

I have only just caught up with this thread how terrible perhaps the local papers can take up the story it may flush out the thieves or drawn attention to who has the hens they may have unwitting been sold to them :?:

How about us omleteers pitching in to help :?:

I will start the ball rolling by pledging the purchase of an Omlet Hen :D

AJuff have PM'd you

Very sad state of affairs over todays society.

Our school has 3 chickens which we were very lucky to have given to us by a local farmer....so you could try that if that is any help?? I did think the security of our chickens was over the top, but not now. The girls have one outside padlock on the big entrance to the school gate, followed by another on their enclosure plus bolts, so it is like fort knox in getting in them when it is your turn to look after them. Also the nest box has a padlock to keep Mr Fox out too!

We have had our supplies donated to us by a local farm shop too, so have been very fortunate. My son today was doing an experiment on the strength of various wrappings on eggs when they are dropped....so the eggs are being well utilised in school lessons as well as the Friday assembly when the egg draw happens.

This is the front page article the local paper ran a few days after the theft. Nothing has been seen or heard from them since. It's all very sad.

We have however been overwhelmed by the generosity of local folk and local buisness. They have offered to give their own hens, buy new ones, donate money. We took the local High School up on their offer to replace the hens as their sixth formers had a collection this morning and raised £60. They are going to choose and name three new hens for us.

Security is to be tightened by the erecting of a new higher fence right around the perimeter of the school garden and padlocks on all the gates. It will make getting to the hens much more difficult for me but worth it if it keeps them safe. Not sure when the new hens will arrive but if it's before the fence they will be housed in the hard quad play area which is completely enclosed. The children will love this as they can play beside them!

On a brighter note at school planning this evening we discussed hatching eggs for our new life topic (I was planning to expand my own flock this spring). As they will be inside the school they'll be safer!!! :D
