Karen & co.
It must have been so difficult to take the lambs we used to rear cade(sp?) lambs when I lived at home, and every summer holiday they went back to the farm for a holiday I never did put 2 and 2 together when we had lamb They will taste good though. karen x
Cate in NZ
Oh, Lesley, sounds like a challenging series of events. It must be hard to watch them go after rearing them yourselves on the farm, but they had a great life, were well fed and cared for.......and will provide some very scrummy roasts

The Dogmother
It must have looked just like that Clare! Pooh and I are of ....... erm .......... similar stature! I just hope that you weren't doing it naked Lesley
Lesley
erm......... no! Last evening we went to collect some new ducks, hoping to provide more company for the drake. We've seen a trio when we collect beekeeping items and know how they've been kept - what we didn't know was whether they were drakes or ducks. We've brought all three back to see - looking and listening this morning when we let them out, it would appear that they are two drakes and a duck, so two will have to go back I have taken photos but I don't think the camera liked the frost and they are all blurred - I'll take some more later
Sheilaz
Well done with the rams, Lesley! Another great achievement on the farm, but what a struggle, both with lambs & lights. This is still my favourite topic to read. Makes my day seem easy! Shame about the ducks, hope you find some more.
Lesley
I think we will wait to see what happens - if they all get on then we may keep them all. We're not fans of duck eggs so perhaps it's meant to be!
The Dogmother
Good luck Lesley We got back from Norfolk to find that the lovely neighbour who looks after the house & animals while we're away has (again) over-fed them all. I gave strict instructions this time and was very clear about amounts to be fed looks like the chooks have had all the corn (which should've lasted another month at least) and the bunnies are stuffed too. Good job we're not away often or for long. They're back to strict rations again.
Lesley
Perhaps he was fattening them up for Christmas Clare? Here are the two lambskins, covered with salt........ Here are the pigs enjoying the sunshine earlier this week........ We took them off to the abattoir this morning It doesn't get any easier - for us, it gets worse Give me a couple of years and I'll be back to strict vegetarian There were no hiccups this time - all went well, we loaded them into the trailer last night and set off at 6.45 this morning, in the dark. We will collect both lamb and pork on Tuesday - it will probably take us until midnight to pack it all into freezers. On a happier note, here are the new ducks we collected on Monday night....... They are nameless while we sort out whether they are ducks or drakes and, consequently, how many will be staying.

The Dogmother
Lovely ducks Lesley. Sorry to hear about the piggies - I'll miss them too - did you hold the Oxford back? I was talking to my lovely farm vet about you and the farm this evening. I'd only dropped in to collect some wormer and ended up chatting - he was interested in your set-up. Mrs Frugal
I love the ducks! They are gorgeous!
Lesley
We didn't keep the pig Clare - she wasn't as friendly as we first thought - and it isn't fair to keep a pig on its own all through the winter. They are very social animals and like company. I think that's why we both found it so hard today Going to the abattoir twice in one week hasn't been fun. At least this year it was before the clocks changed - remember last year? when we had to catch two black Berkshire pigs, in the dark, in a muddy paddock - we couldn't even see tham, let alone catch them
The Dogmother
Golly, I'd forgotten that! Sad for you though, but look forward to all that lovely bacon.
Guest
How are the turkeys Lesley? I'd love to see another picture if you have time. Last time I saw them they were still in a cardboard box! I'm sorry about the abattoir business. I thought you would just get used to it. As a vegetarian, I subscribe whole-heartedly to what you are doing, but I still think I would find it impossible to do myself.

Lesley
I know you probably won't believe me but it will get easier Did you ever get the Tuberculin test done on the coo's No, not yet - they are half trained now though - they will go in through the crush but we haven't got them to come out through it or to have the barrier closed We must try harder - we need 48 hour days! Aunty e
It must be really hard to take them to the abattoir. *Guilty Confession* I have three frozen cockerels in the freezer, that have been there for over a month, because I can't bring myself to eat them yet. I hope my chicks stay small for AGES.
The Dogmother
How are the turkeys Lesley? I'd love to see another picture if you have time. Last time I saw them they were still in a cardboard box! They were big, gobbly and ugly last time i saw them Ginette *yuk!* Louise - you ARE joking? They still run a mile unless you've got food, although I did get a stroke of one when I went crab appling the other week. They have that alarming skittish look about them
