katiew7103
I came home from work tonight at about 3.30pm went down to check on my chooks and found my lovely hybrid Eileen dead. I had strung up a cabbage in the run and I found her dead under that, she was still warm. Other than a trickle of blood from her nose she was untouched and had no obvious injurys or problems. She had been perfectly well this morning and tucked into her breakfast with the others. I feel so sad for her especially as had I gone down there a little earlier I may have been able to help. Can anyone throw any light on her demise.

Patricia W
So sorry, It does happen sometimes like that - and at least she didn't suffer too long.

lillybettybabs
Could she have been hit by the cabbage as it swung? A head injury would explain the blood coming from the nose.
Olly
I hang up cabbages etc for my girls, and I think it's fairly unlikely that it would have swung hard enough to cause any injury, I suspect that's just a coincidence. Sorry to hear of your loss, but sometimes this just happens. Hens are not very robust, and they often conceal illness - but it could have been heart failure or something else, and she may not have had any symptoms. I'm afraid it's all part of the wonderful world of hen-keeping, and while it's very sad, at least she was fit and well until the last moment and didn't suffer a lingering illness. mollyripkim
So sorry to hear about your chick, at least she didn't suffer and had a happy life. I only got my chicks this year and one died unexpectedly after about a month, she was as well as all the others and very happy but found her dead and still warm one morning when I opened up. It's so upsetting isn't it - being so new to it all I felt so guilty that I must have missed something but from all the posts I can see it happens and we never know why. thelurch
I found one of my hens dead in the cube on tuesday morning when I let them out first thing. She was cold so had been dead for a while, no injury or blood and no sign of illness before. Could be anything really but still quite a shock.
