Like a lot of people we play a lot of games at Christmas & I was wondering what you play. We like the cluedo games, have our own dubious version of poker, love pub quiz books & trivial pursuits but our absolute favourite is UNO, which can be funny & competitive. I once played it on a very drunken night in a German campsite with our German neighbours & some French soldiers, none of us could really speak each others languages so the game was amazing & will always be a favourite.

Do any of you play charades? I love charades.

We played the children's game 'Head Banz' on Christmas day. It is really a game for 6 but as there were 10 of us I had to make up some extra bands. Took me AGES to guess I was a butterfly!Even my father (who always declares "Grampa does not play games") joined in and he was a pea!!

We play Cluedo and Uno although this year most of the family were sledging up and down the hill behind my sister's garden instead.

We always used to do charades but sadly no longer do We like card games and Monopoly, occasionally Trivial Pursuits.

We always play Buzz a PS2 quiz game, always causes light hearted arguments

Also got a simple game from John Lewis called Give me five. You get a letter and theres a timer and a category and you have to write down 5 things in the time limit. Very simple but kept us at the table playing after dinner and with kids 19, 21 and 24 thats not easy these days lol . We used to play Monopoly, Cleudo and any board games they got thta year but now it seems we get xmas day and then they are either out with their partners or working! I suppose this is the lull before g.kids!

We bought our 3 children 'Rapidough' for Christmas - similar to pictionary but you model the words using playdough. Played it for the 1st time yesterday, good fun though it does help if the participants can read properly - our 7 year old mistook the word board for boat and got very frustrated when we didn't guess what in her mind was 'ironing boat'!

We have had fun with Jenga this year, and Pictionary. We have also bought an electronic dart board does that count?

This year (so far!) we have played Monopoly, Draughts, Frustration (some of our own additions in the rules!), Roulette (DS's christmas present), cards and had a darts tournament on a magnetic dart board!

 

Still to play Pass the Bomb and Jenga.

Didn't play any games this year but when I was growing up we always played 'parlour games' on Boxing Day - charades, Consequences, Blind Man's Buff and similar Victorian games, and one my mum used to do where she wrote a story with blanks in where the adjectives should be, and had a box of bits of paper with words written on, and you had to pick one and say it when there was a blank. (I'm thinking of repeating this for New Year's Eve with a funny story incorporating the names of some of the guests.)

 

Usually these days we play Pictionary or Trivial Pursuit if there's a lot of us, or Yahtzee, Boggle, crib or dominoes if it's a few. Pass the Bomb is brilliant, haven't done that for years -and yes, Uno is another favourite! I associate most of these games with camping holidays rather than Christmas, though. One thing we NEVER do at Christmas is watch TV!

Trivial pursuits is a favourite in our house but the game on Christmas day just took forever to finish and I ended up drawing a rather fetching house and duck with an etch a sketch with YS by the end

when we (me, kev, BIL x2 & SIL x2) get together for a big dinner we always play games we have also played....

I prepared a quiz for Christmas Day. I didn't know how the teams would divide - in the end they went Boys v Girls. The Boys won but the Girls beat the Boys on the Sport Round and they considered this to be the moral victory.

 

We like Articulate as a board game although our rules are a bit dodgy on it!

We played naughty word Upwords. A bit like scrabble, but you can build words up into towers. A bit naff. We had no rules what so ever. Ultimate cheating going on! We then set up Go Green, but it never got played as we were to tipsy & the poor chickens got put in & out of the coop that many times, even when we didn't land on the foz square. Was very funny.

Thanks for reminding me of Rapidough! I was explaining it on Xmas day, but couldn't think what it was called!

We have particularly enjoyed Articulate (always a favourite with my family) and Mexican Train this year.

I discovered a specialist board game shop in Reading just before Christmas so we bought a Roman strategy game we'd never seen before - Tribune. Difficult to get to grips with the rules so first game was basically a learning process but is actually a very good game.

 

Played monopoly city yesterday. My boys love monopoly but neither OH or myself are fans but this was definitely an improvement on regular monopoly.

We played the new version of cluedo, great fun for the adults though my 11 year old nephew lost interest after the first hour.

Names in the hat game: not sure if someone in the family made this up but everyone writes down about 10 or more famous people/characters, all the names go in a hat. Split into 2 teams, there are 3 rounds:

Round 1 - Describe the person

Round 2 - Charade round, no words

Round 3 - Just one word!

Each person takes it in turn to get through as many names as possible in one minute, you can't pass on a name and if your team don't guess it it goes back in the hat. Each round continues until all names are guessed.

 

On boxing day we played Guesstures, which is based on charades but very fast paced - good fun. The adults also had a great game of Boogle.

 

Christmas wouldn't be the same without playing games.

We got Trivial Pursuit "war of the wedges" which is an interactive DVD game, good fun... Even better cause I won

I bought Go Green game as recommended by an Omleteer. Really good fun. Loved the tiny wheelbarrows, a bit like monopoly but nice to play something new. Otherwise Scrabble is our favorite despite my awful spelling.

It's a spelling game where you can steal words from the other players!!

Love Trivial Pursuit and bought a new version this year subtitled - "bet you know it" We had more fun with this than the traditional game.

 

Board is slightly different and you answer one question only on each turn. If you land on say a pink, entertainment square you choose from one of 4 question cards using the card title which might be anything such as "chillis" "rap" "spongebob squarepants" "sand" etc etc and answer the entertainment question. The difference is that before you are asked the question all of your opponents bet (using the poker chips) as to whether you will know the answer. If you answer correctly and they have all said you will get it wrong you get all the chips; if they bet correctly they get double the chips back from the bank.

 

Each question you answer correctly earns you a pie piece and you can also buy a pie piece using your chips if you land on the right square. We all thought it was much more fun than the traditional game. The questions can be delightfully tenuous - for instance the nature question on the "rap" subject card was - which rap singer sounds like a tree nut - answer - Akon

 

Got it half price in Tesco - £14.99 (£29 in Argos!)

We played Monopoly City, DS loves monopoly but the rest of us feel it goes on too long and he usually wins

 

Can not get the hang of the City one, perhaps we need to play it more than once a year

 

I like board games but find it hard to get the rest of the family to play

Chickendoodle that sounds like a nice twist on the normal Trivial Pursuits game. We have several versions I think we played an anniversary one on Christmas Day, I like the original. We found the family one really hard for some reason . Might invest in the new one.
