Old Speckled Hen
Rebekah Brooks said earlier today that she was appalled about the hacking but denied all knowledge and therefore responsibility for it. In my book (and I used to be married to a journo) she has ultimate responsibility. It is not at all unusual (in fact standard procedure) for a journalist to protect their source, but only to external sources, not their editor who has a duty to know. Yes, my RIP OH worked for Murdoch for years and even on the NOW...........ducks He and a fellow reporter were responsible for exposing the pools scandal and the payola scandal, but that was before Murdoch bought out what was then the Daily Sketch and before me, I hasten to add. There was NO way the editor would be ignorant of how the story was put to bed.
majorbloodnock
What has been alleged is abhorrent. However, what concerns me most is that newspapers are commercial enterprises, so only do what will sell more copies. Ultimately, we have to take rather a hard look at ourselves, since we're all part of the very society making such actions commercially viable. Every copy of "Hello" or "OK" on a coffee table, every episode of "Big Brother", every car that slows down to gawp at a road accident. They all give clues to the kind of morbid voyeurism rife in our society. I imagine few of us consistently commit all the sins of this nature, but most of us quietly indulge in some. Chucky Mama's call for people to boycott NOTW is effectively a demonstration of respecting people's privacy, and I wholeheartedly agree; it's something I suspect we ought to do more in all aspects of our lives. The Dogmother
Got this quote from the Ex.... Even if she didn’t know about the specifics of this particular case, she knew that there was a general acceptance that hacking was part of MO at the newspaper. The Dogmother
I hope that more follow and that stores stop stocking this paper - it is an outdated dinosaur in the world of news anyhow.
Seagazer
The most despicable aspect of this hideous saga is that Millie's family were given hope that she was still alive because texts were being deleted ... and for that reason alone heads should roll. This is what I can't get out of my head, horrible to even try to imagine being in their shoes but to have that hope that perhaps she's run away and still alive but all the while some sleaze bag has hacked into her mobile. I really hope karma is working for all involved. I rarely bother buying newspapers nowadays and have never bought that one.
WarrensWorld
Rebekah Brooks, was the editor at the time and she didn't know a thing about it. Multi tasking.........
KimmyCustard
They just showed the journalist on the news who had carried out the hacking and he 'offered heartfelt apologies to the Dowler family for any distraught he may have caused'. craftyhunnypie
I am appalled at this whole thing. Those poor poor parents. I never have but certainly never will buy News Of The World. Emma.x Edited July 5, 2011 by Guest

Bramble
Let's hear it for Ford (cancelling their advertising contracts with NOTW), it wouldn't need many more big names to take the same action to really punish those responsible ??

beach chick
it will be interesting to see what Tesco does, they are a major advertiser.
majorbloodnock
Even more interesting will be if Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile etc. decide to continue their adverts. I am, of course, only guessing that they advertise in NOTW at the moment, not having read one to know for certain.

PurpleTree
Just saw this on Twitter No #NOTW ads from Ford Vauxhall Renault Cadbury Mumsnet NatWest Halifax Lloyds Coop CocaCola Body Shop Debenhams M&S Virgin Hols! also It seems Morrisons will definitely be advertising in #NOTW and Tesco has said in a letter it will! Yesterday the Co-op said they weren't withdrawing advertising until after an enquiry, but they've obviously changed their minds under the pressure

OK, point taken...it will have to be the local advertiser from now on then. Did anyone see the program on BBC1/2?? last night following the news with Jeremy Paxman? The NOTW or ex reporter was astonishingly unbelievable. OH and I could not believe what we were listening to.
yvonne
In fact Hugh Grant did bring the Milly Dowler hacking case into the public domain when he turned the tables and recorded a conversation with one of the perpetrators in the New Statesman several weeks ago , guess it just wasn't picked up at the time. With thanks to Jemima Khan for tweeting about it. http://www.newstatesman.com/newspapers/2011/04/phone-yeah-cameron-murdoch
