Sammiboo
OH has just booked a cruise for my 30th ( ) next year. This cruise we have 4 days at sea whereas we usually just have the one. On sea days I suffer from sea sickness and as I have 4 of them to cope with i wondered if anyone knew of anything I could take during the course of the holiday as preventative? I usually just take them when I feel ill that are provided by the ship. any advise would be great thank you
Jennifer Jane
I've used Avomine in the past and it worked for me. Hope you have a wonderful holiday and manage to conquer the seasickness.
Minnie&Moose
I use Joyrides for all travel (except when I'm the driver) as I've become increasingly sensitive to motion sickness ever since I was pregnant (12 years ago!). They work well for me and my 11 year old. I did take them every day for a week, many years ago, when I was asked to help on a whale monitoring project - they worked a treat even though I was in a very small boat (inflatable with outboard) for up to 10 hours a day in lively seas and I was able to work comfortably and effectively without any obvious ill effects (and had perhaps the most interesting and exciting week of my life!). Hope you have a good trip.
Alis girls
Joy rides or Sturgeron is one i took when on a boat trip in Spain. I did fall asleep after taking and slept thro the whole 3hours on the boat - the alternative was nearly passing out. What a waste of money that was. they affect everyone differently - your dr might be able to give you something which doesnt make you drowsey. Chicken shack
Sorry Shammibo I suffer so bad that I decided I would never fly again. I had already decided against ships long ago and use Euro Tunnel. If someone booked me a surpise like that they would get a surprise as I would refuse to go. My doctor gave me patches to wear last year which was a type of slow release valium they did work but I reacted terribly to the drug. Perhaps you could talk to your GP and get him to prescribe them to you. I am sure they must be OK for most people but not for me. Good luck and let us know how you get on. UKMARCH
Hi there are herbal ginger tablets which you could take just in case and then take something stronger if need be. We were given these on a boat trip as they knew it was going to be choppy and advised everyone to take them even if they didn't usually suffer. Chickpea
Ditto to ginger as a natural remedy, I got a little sea sick on a cruise and drank ginger beer & felt alot better!
Sheilaz
Chickenshack, I can identify with that. However, since DD2 discovered Traveleze, I've found something that works for me too! Until then, I was always very ill, then found that Stugeron worked but had a weird cognitive effect on me, a complete zombie for 24 hours, very scary, and pointless having shortbreaks. Joyrides worked but had a similar but lesser sideeffect on me, I must react badly to an ingredient, others take them easily. But Traveleze worked, and my brain doesn't shut down, maybe give them a try?
beach chick
I cant remember what they are called, but you can get acupressure wrist bands, they worked for me throughout both pregnancies. Boots sell them...
whoopsie
Hi get some Sea Bands form Boots (make sure you wear them on the right pressure points or they won't work). They have been marvellous for my morning sickness including while were on our cruise in May (which was great - hope you enjoy yours). Ziggy
We use Nelson's travella homeopathic tablets in conjunction with the sea wrist bands when we sail... Myself and two of our DDs tend to get travel sick, and as we sail on sailboats it can get pretty dreadful at times. The travella and wrist bands combination has worked well for us but it's important to use them as prevention rather than wait until one feels sick... Good luck! Tweety
I would recommend the wrist bands too. My sons were both prone to carsickness, and the wrist bands really did the trick. As already mentioned, you do need to put them on before starting the journey, but they are great because they have no side effects.
Sammiboo
thank you wonderful people for all your replies. This cruise isnt until Feb but i am going on one in October with one day at sea so i will be using some ideas as a test run. weve got a balcony next year and my OH thinks if i can see outside it might make me feel better. im feeling green just thinking about it
skillick
I agree with the comments about sea bands. I first used them for my daughter who was always very car sick and she no longer had a problem even in coaches. I then tried them myself for sea sickness, I had never been able to get on a boat on the sea without being very sick but when I used the sea bands I was able to go across the channel on a Sea Cat in a force 7 gale and felt well enough to sit in the bar with a bottle of wine! A real revelation.
AnneT
Hi, For me it's Stugeron that works every time, and I love the fact that I can now get on a boat without worrying about how I'm going to feel, and they don't make me sleepy. Neither wrist bands nor ginger help me. Joy rides make me feel sick, so I steer well clear of those. It does seem that people have different reactions to different tablets though as I remember taking some years ago (I forget their name) and I was in a stupor for about two and a half days afterwards (I can barely remember the holiday and my friends thought I was very boring as I slept all the time), so I'm really cautious about trying new tablets now. With that in mind I'd suggest you think about getting some in advance and trying some on a day when you're not going to be driving and make sure you don't react badly! Have a good holiday! Sammiboo
Just to update on this. we came back from one of the cruises on saturday, fully prepared with the wrist bands and two packets of Stugeron and the sea was like a mill pond so wasnt required. during my time on the ship i have been told i will most likely need them for february
