how do you find out whats in the news?

Recommended Posts

I've become really fed up with newspapers recently. They often seem more interested in football culture & celebs than news. The actual news they report I don't trust because they all have their own political bias. I find news reporting on TV patronising & sensationalist. I tend to search around online for news & the stories behind the news and I like reading various journalists' blogs. I'm not sure it's a very good system though - I always feel like everybody else knows more!

Trying the International Herald Tribune which is refreshing, my son subscribed to it so I'm giving it a go. It comes crashing through the letterbox at 4.30 am though.

I don't buy newspapers as I never seem to get time to read them and then they clutter up the house, half-read and feeling sorry for themselves until I finally admit defeat and put them in the recycling. It's a shame as I like the idea of reading a paper!

I look online. Various different sites but I do use BBC and local newspaper sites as standard.

"I get all the news I need from the weather report".

I haven't bought a paper for years and rarely read the free ones. I look at the BBC website, and the Telegraph online, now that The Times is subscription-only. The older I get, the less I want to read the news.

True about the forum :D

I used to watch Sky News for a quick catch up as it's generally a rolling 15 minute slot with the breaking news along the bottom. Just lately though they don't seem to refresh it often enough and show the same things all day - the hurricane details didn't show anything new for a whole day.

I'm another member of the paperless brigade.

I don't want to spend money on news that's older than what I can get free, and we don't have a television so obviously can't get news that way. The radio in the car is fine for the potted highlights and the BBC web site is plenty for wider coverage if I want it.

If I see a Telegraph lying around at work, I'll use it for the crossword, but apart from that the only need I have for newspapers is for lining the nesting box and poo trays, and my neighbour's weekend rag is more than enough paper for that purpose.

I watch the bbc news channel, read the guardian website, and read a copy of the metro to pass the time on the train to work. Although I have to say the metro is utter rubbish, so many misprints - including printing a picture of a girl said to have died in a car crash on Jamaica, which then turned out to be a picture of a girl who wasn't killed, and caused a bit of upset and panic to people who knew the girl pictured. quality journalism there.

I get 'The Week' magazine every friday. It summarises the UK and world news each week. I would never have a chance to read a paper every day and this suits me. I also like to read The Times on a Saturday. Not bothered about it on a sunday though. I too am a radio 4 listener and tend to have it on between 6 and 7 morning and evening.

I have twitter, and have bbc and the guardian on there, but I would never rely on it for news as too many false rumours get started on there (eg. some of the rumours during the rioting). And the other stuff I used to use it for were things like the budget announcement and election night, but I find the guardian live blog to be more frequently updated, and better, as it isn't restricted to 140 characters and asking me to follow a new link/open a new browsing tab with every news story ;)

I have BBC as my home page so get breaking news if I log on, I also have Sky News app on my phone. I watch BBC Breakfast in the morning because it is the only way that my 2 girls find out about the world, DS reads the papers in the school library quite often at lunchtime. I also find 'I' good if I am traveling anywhere.
