Downton Abbey Series 2 - (Beware spoilers?)

Recommended Posts

Mary - "Matthew, are you OK without your stick?"

Matthew - "You are my stick"

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I watched DA for the first time last night - it's very rare I get to watch TV because of the males in the house!

Can't believe I only discovered it on the last one, I will have to go back to the beginning now!

But this scene really amused me! What a daft line!:lol::lol:

Are they going to do a 3rd Downton (Xmas special apart)? I love Maggie Smith. She really cracks me up and my Sunday's won't be the same without her. I also can't help hoping that Mary and Matthew will make it one day even if she is not as much like a stick as Lavinia was. The business with His Nibbs and the maid was, however, a bit unbelievable. I just don't think his Lordship would be the type to go for that frilly doings she has on her head

Completely agree with you Cheeky Chook. Jane the maid and me Lord was ridiculous. Absolutely loved Maggie Smith, she delivered her lines so fabulously! Will really miss Downton next week...what am I to do? As for Mr and Mrs Bates, that was coming right from the beginning of the episode...did they hype that or what?!

The trouble is when a drama gets re-commissioned it can turn into a soap opera. As a 3rd series had been already commissioned there was no need to conclude any of the stories on this series and if a 4th was in the pipeline the same would happen again. There is no benefit in a soap of people being happy!

Although as the time seems to move very quickly in the backgound there must be an end otherwise we would still have the cast the same age when WW2 broke out

I enjoyed this series as it was (I think) unintentionally funny but not sure I will stick with it much longer. Or maybe Julian Fellowes is a genius and meant to make it silly.

You are right... although I think the 3rd series would be the last one. Julian Fellowes said (after series 1 I think) that he had hoped to tell the story over 3 series.

Edited to add: here's a link. This isn't the website I read it on originaly, but it is referring to the same interview http://www.cultbox.co.uk/news/headlines/2109-downton-abbey-to-end-after-series-3-suggests-julian-fellowes

Ooo a 3rd series, I am pleased. :D I know what you mean about the soap opera element but I wouldn't have minded if it had got to WW2+ (with them all getting properly older, even if it would mean the demise of 'Granny') as I have really enjoyed watching the evolution of the middle class element into the traditional gap between up and down stairs. starting with maids actually beeing seen and being allowed to serve at dinner, and then people starting to make money through real jobs like journalism, even if those who considered 'going into buisness' (I'll wash my mouth out, Maggie) didn't quite make it. I have also loved watching the change in the clothes from those lovely Edwardian creations to things a bit more practical (well, just a teensy bit).

Well I really enjoyed this series but wish they hadn't sped through it all so quickly, if they knew they were going to make a 3rd series then they could have taken a bit longer with the stories.

His Lordship's relationship with the maid was just so silly, so unbelievable. Cora is busy doing good deeds and the poor man is left to have lunch on his own so he decides to take a fancy to a new maid?? I thought he was supposed to be a man of high morals. But I supposed we had to have him having a kiss with the maid so that he was happy for Sybil to go off with the chauffeur?

I have to say that I thought at the beginning that it would be Lavinia that died, it seemed to obvious for it to be Carson or Cora.

Looking forward to the Christmas special. :D

Season Two is coming to our Public Television station. I am so excited. I just loved it. The write up in the public television magazine quoted the New York Times calling it an "instant classic" and the Wall Street Journal hailing it as "impossible to resist." It is so true, it is impossible to resist. I hope they have many seasons of this show. The station just finished up with Doc Martin, which I also loved. The start of the season two is on 8 Jan, can't wait!!!
